CULLOWHEE, N.C. – On Saturday, the Wofford College baseball team split a doubleheader against Western Carolina at Childress Field. Wofford won the first game 20-10 and Western Carolina took game two 8-4. The Terriers earned the series win against the Catamounts.
In the first game, Western Carolina had a 5-4 lead after two innings. Wofford took the lead with five runs in the top of the third inning and added ten runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 20-10 win in seven innings. The Catamounts took a 2-0 lead after two innings in the second game. After Wofford tied the game in the third inning, Western Carolina went ahead 4-2 in the fifth inning. The Catamounts added four runs in the bottom of the seventh on the way to the 8-4 final score.
Wofford is 32-18 overall and 19-8 in the Southern Conference. Western Carolina is 23-19 on the season and 11-11 in league play. Wofford has won four of the six games played between the teams this season and has taken both series. The Terriers have won four straight three-game series against the Catamounts.
GAME ONE NOTABLES
- The five home runs by Wofford were the most in a single game this season and the most since hitting five against Marist in 2018. Lawson Hill and Jack Renwick both hit their first career home runs in the game.
- The Terriers had nine hits and ten runs in the fourth inning. The ten runs are tied for the seventh most in school history, while the nine hits are tied for second in school history in an inning.
- The 21 hits in the game are the seventh most in school history and the third most in a SoCon contest. The 20 runs in the game are the most this season.
- Lawson Hill was 4-of-5 from the plate with a career-high six RBIs. John Dempsey and Colin Davis added three hits each as all nine starters had at least one hit.
- Wofford starter Devon Sharts went 1.2 innings with five runs allowed on five hits and a strikeout. Sam Stratton (4-4) threw 2.2 innings with four runs allowed on four hits and three strikeouts. Zach Byron went an inning with one run allowed. Matthew Marchal did not allow a run in the final 1.2 innings with two hits allowed.
- Tristen Campbell (2-2) started for Western Carolina and allowed seven runs on six hits in 2.2 innings. Davis Tyndall went two-thirds of an inning with six runs allowed on five hits. GAME ONE HOW IT HAPPENED
- With one out in the top of the first, Colin Davis and Lawson Hill hit back-to-back home runs. It was the first time this season Wofford has had back-to-back home runs in a game. The Terriers left two runners on base.
- The Catamounts had one out in the first when a solo home run was followed by a single. An error on a fielder's choice gave Western Carolina two runners on base when a home run gave them a 4-2 lead.
- Wofford had two outs in the top of the second when Nolen Hester walked and Colin Davis reached on an error. A single by Lawson Hill drove in both runners to tie the game at 4-4. The Catamounts then loaded the bases with one out on a walk and two singles. A sacrifice fly gave them a 5-4 lead.
- In the top of the third with two outs, Brennen Dorighi hit his second home run of the season and tied the game at 5. Shane Lussier walked and Matty Brown had a ground rule double. A single up the middle by Nolen Hester gave the Terriers a 7-5 lead. Colin Davis then hit his second home run of the day to make it 9-5.
- Western Carolina got one run back in the bottom of the third with a solo home run. Wofford led off the fourth inning with a single by Trey Yunger and walk by Jack Renwick. A double by John Dempsey scored both for an 11-6 advantage. Dempsey moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a bunt single by Shane Lussier. Matty Brown walked and with two outs, Colin Davis singled to drive in Lussier to make it a 13-6 game. A double by Lawson Hill added two more runs. Trey Yunger singled for his second time in the inning to score Hill as Wofford took a 16-6 lead. Jack Renwick then hit his first career home run to push the lead to 18-6. John Dempsey doubled and scored on a single by Brennen Dorighi to make it 19-6 in the middle of the fourth.
- In the bottom of the fourth, an error was followed by an RBI triple and with one out a double had cut the lead to 19-8. They left two runners on base to end the inning.
- Wofford began the fifth inning with singles by Matty Brown and Nolen Hester. The Catamounts turned a double play and Lawson Hill followed with a walk. A fielder's choice ended the top half. A double led off the Catamount half of the inning and with one out the runner scored on an error.
- Jack Renwick singled to lead off the top of the sixth inning for the Terriers. A strikeout and strikeout with a caught stealing on the play ended the half. Western Carolina had two runners on base via walks with one out. With two outs, a single drove in a run to cut the lead to 19-10.
- Shane Lussier walked to open the seventh inning and he advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A walk to Nolen Hester led to an RBI single with two outs by Lawson Hill to make it 20-10. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Catamounts had a double. A ground out ended the game.
GAME TWO NOTABLES
- Western Carolina had 15 hits in the game and held Wofford to nine hits. Jack Renwick led the Terriers with three hits, while Nolen Hester and Colin Davis added two hits.
- Elliot Carney (5-3) started for Wofford and went five innings with four runs allowed on eight hits, along with five strikeouts. Dalton Rhadans allowed four runs on five hits in two innings with four strikeouts. Dom Marcoccio allowed two hits in an inning, along with one strikeout.
- Western Carolina starter Gavin Mortenson went three innings with two runs allowed on four hits and two strikeouts. Jacob Corn (2-1) threw five innings with two runs allowed on five hits and six strikeouts. Zach Franklin did not allow a hit in the ninth inning.
GAME TWO HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first inning, Wofford was retired in order and Western Carolina had a single with two outs. After a wild pitch advanced the runner, an RBI single gave the Catamounts a 1-0 lead.
- Trey Yunger walked to start the second inning and Jack Renwick followed with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position, but they were unable to cross the plate.
- Western Carolina had a double with one out and a double with two outs to make it a 2-0 game at the end of two innings.
- With one out in the top of the third inning, Nolen Hester singled and scored on a double by Colin Davis. Lawson Hill walked and Trey Yunger reached on bunt that allowed Davis to tie the game at 2-2. After the Catamounts turned a double play to close out the top half, they were retired in order in the bottom of the inning.
- After both teams were retired in the fourth inning, Colin Davis singled with two outs in the top of the fifth before a fielder's choice ended the top of the fifth. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, a single was followed by a home run to give the Catamounts a 4-2 advantage. They added a double and a single but were unable to add to the lead.
- In the top of the sixth, Trey Yunger led off with a walk and Jack Renwick followed with a single. A fielder's choice and two strikeouts ended the scoring chance. Western Carolina left one on base in the bottom half after a walk.
- With one out in the top of the seventh, Nolen Hester singled and Colin Davis walked. On a fielder's choice by Lawson Hill, Hester scored, and Hill moved to second on an error as the lead was cut to 4-3.
- Western Carolina had back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, an RBI single was followed by a double that plated two runs for a 7-3 advantage. Another RBI single made it 8-3 at the end of the inning.
- Wofford led off the eighth with a single by Jack Renwick and he stole second. With two outs, a double by Ryan Galanie drove in Renwick to make it an 8-4 game. The Catamounts had two outs in the bottom of the eighth when they had a pair of singles, but both were stranded.
- Nolen Hester reached on an error to lead off the ninth inning, but the Catamounts then turned a double play. A ground out ended the contest.
SOCON STANDINGS
The 19 wins in league play are the most in school history for Wofford. The Terriers have secured one of the top three seeds in the upcoming SoCon Tournament (along with Samford and Mercer). Samford (.704) has secured the Blue Division. Mercer (.708) and Wofford (.704) are battling for the Red Division title next weekend, although both have secured their spot in the tournament. East Tennessee State, UNCG, VMI and Western Carolina all still have a chance for the fourth spot in Greenville.

Wofford will play at Kennesaw State on Tuesday, May 18 in a game that was added to the schedule. The contest against Winthrop on May 19 has been canceled.
