CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team fell in a 1-0 decision to Charlotte on Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field. The 49ers scored the lone goal in the match on a penalty kick in the second half.
The Terriers had the first shot of the game at the three-minute mark as
Mia Bookhard was wide right. The next three five shots came from the 49ers, with two of them on goal and saved by
Maria Mon. Wofford's
Katie Gilligan had a shot saved at the 33-minute mark and
Caileen Almeida missed a shot high a minute later. The game was tied 0-0 at the half.
Charlotte had the opening shot of the second half less than two minutes into play. The 49ers took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by Michaella Arteta at the 59:35 mark after a foul in the box. The first shot of the second half by the Terriers was from
Rachel Rasins at the 80:38 mark, with the shot saved by Charlotte. Wofford had control of the ball for the final four minutes of the contest but were unable to score the equalizer.
Overall, Wofford (1-3) had four shots to 14 for Charlotte (4-0). Charlotte also had a twelve to one advantage in corner kicks.
Maria Mon (0-1) had four saves for the Terriers. Charlotte keeper Emma Wakeman (1-0) had two saves in the match.
The Terriers play at USC Upstate on Friday night at 7:00 p.m., followed by a road game at the University of Georgia on Sunday, September 5. The next home game will be Thursday, September 9 against Appalachian State.
