SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford head men's basketball coach
Jay McAuley announced the promotion of assistant
Dwight Perry to associate head coach on Friday afternoon, as Perry enters his third year with the Terriers ahead of the 2021-22 season.
Â
"Dwight has been instrumental in so many areas of our program since joining our staff," said McAuley. "He is constantly impacting winning with his ability to teach and connect with our players, recruits and their families. His future is bright here at Wofford and beyond."
Â
Widely regarded as a top assistant in the Southern Conference, Perry has been influential to Wofford's success over the past two seasons, including the tremendous development of guards in the program along with his unique recruiting ability in the Midwest and Southeast.
Â
"I am extremely grateful to Coach McAuley for this opportunity," said Perry of the promotion. "Like all things in our program, it starts and stops with our players. I look forward to continuing to push them to be the best they can be on and off the court and helping bring another SoCon championship to Wofford."
In his two years, Perry has assisted in producing seven all-conference selections for Wofford, most notably in guards Nathan Hoover,
Storm Murphy,
Morgan Safford and
Max Klesmit, while helping further the Terriers' identity as a consistent SoCon contender in finishing just a half game out of first place for the 2020-21 season.
Â
Along with Perry's influence, Wofford has finished as a top-tier 3-point shooting program over the past two seasons, finishing the 2020-21 season seventh in the nation in 3-point field goals made per game (10.2) while finishing fifth in the nation in total 3-point field goals made for the 2019-20 season (330).
Â
In his first season with Wofford, Perry made an immediate impact, scouting upsets of No. 17 North Carolina and the second-seeded Furman Paladins in the Southern Conference Tournament en route to Wofford's second consecutive SoCon Championship appearance. Â Â
Â
Prior to Wofford, Perry spent five seasons at Furman University, assisting the Paladins to a 91-68 overall record with three 20-win seasons and a shared regular season title in 2016-17 over the span, while helping recruit and coach 17 all-freshman and all-conference selections, including two SoCon Players of the Year and one Freshman of the Year. Â
Â
Prior to Furman, the Durham, N.C. native served as a graduate assistant under former Virginia Commonwealth head coach Shaka Smart for two seasons before being named as the Rams' video coordinator for the 2013-14 campaign. During his three-year stint in Richmond, Va., the Rams posted an 82-26 record and made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, including appearances in the round of 32 in both of Perry's seasons as a graduate assistant.
Â
A 2010 graduate of the University of Kentucky, Perry played three seasons for the Wildcats and earned a degree in business management. He served as an intern with Stanford's men's basketball program for two years before joining VCU, where he earned a master's degree in sport leadership in May of 2013.
Â
Perry married the former Brittany Gee in August of 2016 and the couple have a son, Dwight III (Trey).
