Cranford Earns First Top-10, Leads Men’s Golf at Carolina Cup

Freshman Max Cranford paced the Terriers as both secured top-10 results

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It was another top-10 result for the Wofford men's golf team at the Carolina Country Club in The Carolina Cup supported by Proud Partners Taco Bell and the BMW Performance Center, co-hosted by Wofford and USC Upstate. The Terriers finished in a tie for eighth, led by freshman Max Cranford's efforts to tie for seventh individually, his first-career top-10 result.

Wofford totaled 889 for the tournament on its home course, the par-72 6,929-yard Carolina Country Club, finishing 25-over par to tie with Jacksonville. The eighth-place tie in the 14-team field secures a fourth consecutive top-10 finish for the Terriers in events fielding at least 10 teams and a fifth-straight overall including last season's SoCon Championships, which featured only eight squads.

Wofford earned wins over five teams, including co-host USC Upstate and fellow Palmetto State foe Winthrop. UAB ran away with the team title with a 20-under par 844, a tournament record. The individual champion was Mercer's Tobias Jonsson, who edged out UAB's Khavish Varadan to prevent a Blazer sweep. Jonsson carded a 12-under 204, also a tournament record, to beat out Varadan's 205 by a stroke.

The Terriers recorded the most pars in the field with 170. Unfortunately, Wofford tallied the second-fewest birdies with 32, as only Creighton scored fewer with 28.

The top Terrier was freshman Max Cranford, as the youngster posted a career-low 213 at 3-under par to tie for seventh. This marks the first top-10 finish of his young career. After a first-round 73, Cranford found his stride to follow up with a 71 and then a final-round 69. That 69 matches his career-low, giving him already two rounds under 70 on his young career. With 39 pars, Cranford finished one shy of the tournament lead to sit in second, as only Kennesaw State's Shaun Cook had more with 40.

Bailey Means was the top Terrier competing as an individual, posting a 4-over 220 to tie for 26th. The senior recorded a career-low 70 to open the tournament and sit tied for ninth after a day of play. But despite stumbling with a 74 and 76, Means still posted a career-best finish. He tied his career-bests with his 4-over score and 220 total. With 14 birdies, he recorded almost half of Wofford's team total to finish tied for the fourth-most in the tournament.

At 5-over par with a career-best 221, Will Jones finished just behind Means in a tie for 31st. Harry Jones and Jackson Hill were both not far behind, each tying for 34th with 6-over 222's as both competed as individuals.

Cedric Otten tied for 50th with a 227 (73-76-78), and Walker Jones tied for 71st with a 236 (76-83-77). Matthew Larkin rounds out the Wofford team lineup with a 79th-place finish, scoring 240.

Ben Jordan concludes the Terrier lineup overall, as he competed as an individual and finished tied for 41st. The freshman carded a score of 224 with a 73 in each of the final two rounds to make up for his opening 78.

Wofford will conclude its fall slate of action with one more event at the end of the month. The Terriers travel down to Charleston, S.C. to compete in the Daniel Island Intercollegiate hosted by Charleston Southern. The fall finale will run from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.
