Baseball Powers Past Lafayette, Downs Leopards 9-2

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Behind a two-run blast from Brennen Dorighi, the Wofford baseball team roared past Lafayette 9-2 at Russell C. King Field Sunday afternoon. Wofford improves to 9-7 on the season, extending its winning streak to three games and securing a series win over the Leopards. Lafayette drops to 2-12 with the result.

Coulson Buchanan (1-0) earned his first-career win after 1.1 innings of relief work. The freshman righty did not allow a run and gave up only one hit and one walk, striking out three. Buchanan was on in relief of starter Josh Vitus, who tossed 4.2 innings and surrendered just two runs. He fanned seven. Dalton Rhadans struck out one in a singular inning, and Holden Wilder punched out two in 2.0 innings of work to close out the ballgame. Neither Rhadans nor Wilder allowed a hit, walk or run. The Terrier pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts and limited Lafayette to just five hits.

The loss was charged to Lafayette starter Kyle Subers (0-4) after he gave up four runs on five hits.

The Wofford bats were hot today, with 10 total hits as a club. Brennen Dorighi led the way as one of four Terriers with two hits. One of Dorighi's knocks was a massive two-run home run as he collected three total RBI in the game. Nolen Hester and Lawson Hill each picked up two hits and two RBI, and John Dempsey was the final member of the two-hit club in the contest. Though hitless, Trey Yunger reached base three times via the free pass.

Wofford did not take long, immediately pouncing on Lafayette for a four-run first inning. Nolen Hester started things off with an RBI bunt single to the pitcher. Lawson Hill brought home another run with a single back up the middle. Brennen Dorighi then clubbed a long ball over the centerfield fence to plate both Hill and himself, granting the Terriers a quick 4-0 advantage.

Lafayette responded with a round-tripper of its own in the following frame, a solo shot to right center. The lead stood at 4-1.

The Leopards tacked on another run to halve the lead with an RBI double in the top of the fifth. Wofford's lead was just 4-2.

The Terriers acquired some more breathing room in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of a five-run inning. An RBI fielder's choice by Jack Renwick kicked off the scoring, and he would later come home on a wild pitch. Hester then doubled to center, plating one more. He came home after Hill dropped a single into left centerfield, and a Dorighi single through the right side capped the scoring. Wofford's lead was lifted to 9-2.

Holden Wilder then took the mound, and he shut the door on the Leopards to preserve the margin and grant Wofford the 9-2 victory.

The Terriers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at Russell C. King Field for the series finale against Lafayette. First pitch against the Leopards is slated for 3:30 p.m.
