Wofford Baseball Completes Sweep of Lafayette in Lopsided 19-1 Triumph

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team scored in every inning but one en route to a 19-1 rout, completing the three-game sweep of the Lafayette Leopards Monday evening. The Terriers extend their winning streak to four games, improving to 10-7 on the campaign. Lafayette drops to 2-13 on the year. The sweep is Wofford's first of the season.

Lucas Mahlstedt (2-0) earned the win for the Terriers in relief, tossing 2.0 innings of scoreless work. He struck out three with no walks and only one hit allowed. Dom Marcoccio started for Wofford, throwing 4.0 innings and striking out two. He allowed just one run (not earned) on three hits and two walks.

Leopard starter Jake Bloss (0-2) took the loss after pitching 5.0 innings and surrendering seven runs (four earned).

The Terrier bats were hot, producing 16 hits in the contest, the most yet in a game this season. Wofford's 19 runs are also a season high. The last time Wofford put up that many runs was May 15, 2021 in the first leg of a seven-inning doubleheader at Western Carolina, in which the Terriers scored 20 runs in a 20-10 win. Eleven different Terriers recorded hits in the game, and eight tallied an RBI.

Five players totaled two-hit games: Jack Renwick, Ryan Galanie, John Dempsey, Cameron Gill and Ben Schulte. Renwick and Gill each reached base a third time by way of a walk. Andrew Calhoun was the only Terrier with multiple RBI, picking up three on one swing – a three-run blast for his only hit of the ballgame and first homer of the season.

Wofford struck first with two runs in the first thanks to a solo long ball from Jack Renwick and then a Leopard throwing error allowing a runner to come home.

Lafayette pulled within one in the top of the second after a passed ball allowed a runner to score.

However, another Lafayette throwing error in the bottom of the frame brought home two more Terriers, extending the lead to 4-1.

Wofford did not relent from there, tacking on two more in the bottom of the third with a John Dempsey RBI double and Cameron Gill RBI single.

A wild pitch brought home another run in the bottom of the fifth, giving Wofford a 7-1 advantage.

After being held scoreless in the fifth, the only such inning in the game for Wofford, the Terriers got back to it in the sixth. Galanie tripled home a run, and Nolen Hester drove him home with a single through the right side.

Another Leopard wild pitch in the seventh plated a Terrier, making the score 10-1 in favor of Wofford.

The floodgates opened in the bottom of the eighth, with the Terriers pouring on nine runs, tying for the most they have scored in a single inning this season. The highlight of the scoring spree was Andrew Calhoun's pinch-hit three-run home run to left center, his first of the season. Wofford's lead ballooned to 19-1 after the inning, and a scoreless ninth locked down the victory, the largest of the season for the Terriers.

Wofford will be back in action at Russell C. King Field tomorrow night with a 6:00 p.m. contest against the Cincinnati Bearcats.
