CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Wofford College men's and women's track and field teams began the outdoor season on Friday and Saturday at the 49er Classic hosted by Charlotte at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center. The team had numerous top ten finishes and three school records were set or tied in the meet.
Events on Friday began with the women's 100-meter hurdles, with
Kerrington Johnson finishing second in 13.95. In the 400 meters
Madeline McNinch was tenth at 59.33 for the women and Cagan Campell (48.85) and
Conor Murphy (48.86) were second and third respectively for the men. Marga Van der Linde was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:06.65 and
Lily Meetze was tenth at 1:10.22.
Grant Witherspoon was fifth in the men's 400-meter hurdles at 55.32. The 10,000 meters ended the day's events and
Carolyne Shealy (39:45.31) was third and
Katharine Spence (40:27.41) was sixth for the women. For the men,
Carson Archie was third in 31:55.03 and
Beck Classey was sixth in 32:14.32 as both were under the previous school record time.
During the running events on Saturday,
Cagan Campbell was tenth in the 200 meters at 21.83. The men's 4x800 meter relay took fourth place in 8:33.01. The women's 4x400 relay teams were seventh and tenth overall.
In the field events on both days,
Jenna Reid was third in the hammer at 47.28 meters and second in the javelin at 44.52 meters to set a new school record. Paulo Szuba took third place in the javelin at 49.18 meters.
Rylee Jorgensen was eighth in the triple jump at 11.07 meters and
Netanya Linares was sixth in the high jump at 1.63 meters, which tied her current school record mark.
The meet featured 25 teams, including Gardner-Webb, USC Upstate, Wake Forest, Appalachian State, UNC Greensboro, Davidson, East Tennessee State and Winthrop from the Division I ranks.
The Terries will next compete at the Weems Baskin Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina on March 25 and 26 in Columbia.
