NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Wofford baseball team overcame an initial deficit for only the second time this season, winning in comeback fashion 8-2 over the Belmont Bruins at E.S. Rose Park to claim the three-game series two games to one. The Terriers improve to 13-8 in the campaign with the result, while the Bruins drop to 14-7.
Â
Holden Wilder (2-0) earned the win in relief for Wofford after pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless ball. He didn't allow a run or hit and struck out one.
Matthew Marchal tossed 4.0 innings as the starter, giving up just a single run while punching out three.
Lucas Mahlstedt was first out of the bullpen, hurling 0.2 innings and surrendering one run. Wilder was next on the bump, followed by
Dalton Rhadans, who closed out the final 3.0 innings. He didn't allow a run and gave up only three hits with two punchouts.
Â
Belmont starter Jalen Borders (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing four runs in 4.1 innings.
Â
Wofford totaled 12 hits on the day, just one more than Belmont's 11. Thought the sides were almost equal on hits, the Terriers made more of their opportunities and drew more walks, eight to two, to push across eight runs.
Nolen Hester led the way with three hits and three RBI.
Lawson Hill tallied the only other multi-hit performance with two base knocks and an RBI. He reached twice more via the free pass.
Brice Martinez also worked two walks and secured a hit.
Â
Belmont struck first in the bottom of the first for a second-straight contest. With runners on first and second and two outs, the Bruins knocked an RBI single to left field, plating the third base runner. The first base runner made it third base but strayed just a little too far in feigning toward home after the throw came into the infield, with
Brice Martinez delivering a perfect strike to
Ryan Galanie at the third base bag to cut the runner down and get out of the inning with minimal damage.
Â
The Belmont lead was short-lived with an immediate Wofford retaliation in the top of the second.
Lawson Hill led things off with a double to left field, and a hit batsman followed by and infield bunt single loaded the bases.
Brennen Dorighi lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Hill and tie the ballgame at one all.
Â
Both pitchers would settle down, holding things scoreless until the Terriers broke through with a big inning in the top of the fifth. Martinez drew a lead-off walk, followed by a
Marshall Toole bunt single. Galanie worked a free pass himself to lead the bases, and a
Jack Renwick fielder's choice plated a run to put Wofford in the lead. The Terriers did not stop there, as Hill picked up a bunt single of his own to bring home a second run. After a flyout brought Belmont within an out of escaping the inning, a double steal put two runners in scoring position, a situation that
Nolen Hester capitalized on by singling through the left side to score them both. Dorighi singled to right field, and an error by the right fielder on the play allowed Hester to score, capping off the frame with Wofford in front 6-1.
Â
The Bruins got a run back in the bottom of the frame when a double play allowed a runner to score. The Terrier lead was 6-2 after five innings.
Â
The Terriers didn't need long to get that run back, as a Galanie RBI groundout in the top of the sixth made the score 7-2.
Â
An RBI single by Hester in the top of the ninth inning provided Wofford with an insurance run to make the score 8-2, which would be the final tally after
Dalton Rhadans closed the door in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory for Wofford.
Â
The Terriers return to Spartanburg for their next contest on Tuesday, but it will be a road affair as Wofford takes on USC Upstate across town. The matchupÂ
