SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team was locked in a back-and-forth battle early, but pulled away late and outlasted the USC Upstate Spartans at Harley Park for a 10-6 victory. The Terriers improve to 14-8 with the win, a second-straight triumph. The Spartans fall to 14-7 with the result.
Â
Holden Wilder (3-0) earned his third win of the season, marking three-straight appearances with a victory. He was the third arm out of Wofford's bullpen, tossing 2.0 shutout innings with no hits and just a single walk.
Dom Marcoccio started for the Terriers, going 3.2 innings while allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits.
Luke Stephens was first on in relief, hurling 1.1 innings with three punchouts and no runs, walks or hits. Next was Wilder followed by
Dalton Rhadans, who surrendered just one hit in 1.0 inning with one strikeout.
Clay Schwaner pitched the ninth inning, allowing three runs on three hits and fanning two.
Â
The loss was charged to Gage Gillott (0-1) after he allowed a run in 2.0 innings of work.
Â
The Wofford bats remained hot, putting up 10 runs on 12 hits. The Terriers also worked five walks.
Ryan Galanie led the way with three hits and a free pass, driving home three runs. One of his hits was a solo homer for his sixth long ball of the season. He also swiped two bags. Reigning SoCon Player of the Week
John Dempsey kept swinging well, knocking three hits.
Jack Renwick tallied just one hit, but he matched Galanie with three RBI in the contest.
Â
Wofford struck first quickly, plating two runs for an early lead in the top of the first.
Marshall Toole led the game off by wearing a pitch, and
John Dempsey singled through the right side to give Wofford runners at the corners.
Jack Renwick laid down a well-placed sacrifice bunt to bring Toole in and advance Dempsey to second, and
Ryan Galanie's single to right center brought Dempsey home to give the Terriers an immediate 2-0 lead.
Â
USC Upstate pulled level in the bottom of the second, starting with an RBI double to secure its first run. A sacrifice fly to left field brought in the tying run, making it a 2-2 ballgame.
Â
The Terriers immediately reclaimed the lead in the following frame. Dempsey kicked things off with a double into the right center gap, and a Renwick sacrifice bunt moved him over to third. Galanie grounded out, but picked up an RBI as Dempsey ran home to put Wofford back in front 3-2.
Â
The Spartans again tied the score in the bottom of the fourth by way of a throwing error. After four innings, the game was even at three apiece.
Â
The pitching settled down to slow the see-saw scoring for three and a half innings, but Wofford struck again in the top of the seventh to pull back ahead. Back-to-back free passes to
Brice Martinez and
Zeb Roos placed two Terriers on base to begin the inning, but two quick outs put the Spartans in position to escape unscathed. However, Renwick would not allow that fate, smacking a single right back up the middle to plate both runners and give Wofford a 5-3 lead.
Â
The Terriers tacked on a few more in the eighth to extend their lead. Galanie started it off with a solo round-tripper to left field. A sacrifice fly from Roos later scored one more run, lifting Wofford's lead to 7-3.
Â
Wofford added three more runs in the top of the ninth for good measure, first by way of an RBI fielder's choice from
Lawson Hill. A pinch-hit RBI double from
Gunnar Johnson brought in the second run of the inning, and a Hester sacrifice fly put Wofford in double-digits. The score was 10-3 in favor of the Terriers.
Â
The Spartans attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, starting with two RBI singles. An RBI fielder's choice made the score 10-6, but that's where the comeback efforts and the game ended with a Terrier win.
Â
The Terriers are back in action this weekend for a split series with Gardner-Webb. Game one against the Runnin' Bulldogs is Friday night at 6:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
