Wofford Baseball Opens Series With 4-2 Win Behind Pitching, Galanie’s Long Ball

Terrier pitchers struck out 10 batters, and Ryan Galanie smashed a three-run blast

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team won a low-scoring affair at Russell C. King Field Friday night, dropping the Pennsylvania Quakers 4-2 in the opening matchup of a four-game set. The Terriers improve to 4-5, while the Quakers fall to 2-2.

Dom Marcoccio (1-1) earned the win for Wofford as the starter, tossing 4.0 innings of one-run ball. He allowed four hits and a walk, striking out five. Dalton Rhadans (1) notched his first save of the season, and the first for the Terriers, pitching the final 3.0 innings to shut the door. Rhadans surrendered just one hit and struck out three. Carter Bailey hurled 1.1 innings for Wofford as the first reliever out of the bullpen, allowing a run and tallying two punchouts. The only other Terrier to toe the rubber was Holden Wilder, who pitched 0.2 scoreless innings before handing the ball over to Rhadans.

Penn starter Kevin Eaise (0-1) received the loss after throwing 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits, one walk and all four Wofford runs.

Both pitching staffs were throwing well, with the Quakers striking out nine Wofford hitters. Terrier pitchers accrued 10 punchouts, the fifth-straight game with double-digit strikeouts. There were only three walks issued between the two squads in the entire contest, with Penn working two and Wofford getting the other.

Ryan Galanie led the way for the Terriers, as his only hit was a big one – a three-run home run. He drew the only walk by a Wofford batter tonight to reach base a second time. Jack Renwick and Brennen Dorighi each posted two-hit performances, with Dorighi also securing an RBI. Renwick was one of three Terriers to swipe a base in the game, the others being Brice Martinez and Shane Lussier.

It did not take Wofford long to strike, doing so in big fashion. A throwing error followed by a Jack Renwick single put two runners on base. After an out, Ryan Galanie stepped up and launched a three-run bomb to right field, giving the Terriers the early advantage.

Penn would respond in the fourth inning, plating a run by way of a single to left field. The Wofford lead stood at 3-1.

Two innings later, the Quakers made it a one-run ballgame, hitting a homer of their own. Fortunately for the Terriers, the Penn home run was just a solo shot, so the Terriers still held the lead, but it was cut to 3-2.

The Terriers got a run back in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead. Trey Yunger led the inning off with a triple, and Brennen Dorighi immediately brought him home with a single up the middle. Wofford's lead was 4-2.

Penn got a runner on base with one out in the top of the ninth, but Dalton Rhadans remained steadfast to retire the next two batters and lock down the 4-2 Wofford triumph.

The Terriers and Quakers will meet twice tomorrow in a Saturday doubleheader. The first of two seven-inning games is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch at Russell C. King Field.
