SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With the game knotted up at four all and a runner on a third base, the Wofford Terriers baseball team capitalized on a Pennsylvania miscue to score what would be the winning run when a passed ball allowed
Trey Yunger to score. A scoreless ninth locked down the victory, 5-4, over the Quakers. Wofford improves to 6-6 after the tight ballgame, while Penn drops to 3-4. The Terriers earn their second series win of the season, 3-1.
Â
Lucas Mahlstedt (1-0) earned his first-career win after pitching the final 3.0 innings for Wofford. The freshman allowed only two hits and no runs, striking out two.
Dom Agron started on the bump, tossing the first inning and relenting two runs.
Matthew Marchal hurled the middle 5.0 innings, allowing just two runs (none earned) on four hits. He fanned 11, a career-high and a new single-game best for a Terrier this season.
Â
Sam Bennett (0-1) suffered the loss for the Quakers, pitching 1.1 innings. He relented just one run, the winning run.
Â
Runs were at a premium after the first three innings, as Wofford scored the lone run in the later innings. Both teams' bullpens were stout, with Penn's surrendering just the singular run, while Wofford's gave up only two. The Quaker relievers tallied nine strikeouts, and all 13 Terrier punchouts were achieved by the relievers.
Â
Even with the effective pitching, Wofford batters found a way.
Nolen Hester and
Brennen Dorighi each posted two-hit affairs, with Hester scoring two runs.
Jack Renwick and
John Dempsey totaled all four Wofford RBI, with each hitter tallying two. The Terriers worked four walks as a squad.
Ryan Galanie drew one of those free passes, extending his on-base streak to 12 games.
Â
Penn struck first loudly with a two-run blast to left field in the top of the first inning.
Â
Wofford responded quickly, immediately pulling level in the bottom of the initial frame.
Nolen Hester ripped a lead-off single to begin the action. A
Lawson Hill single would establish runners on first and second with one out. After a strikeout,
John Dempsey stepped up to the dish and roped a double to left field. Both baserunners came around to score, and the game stood even at two apiece.
Â
In the second inning, Wofford again utilized a two-run double, this time taking the lead.
Matty Brown reached on a fielder's choice, and Hester worked a walk to again put two runners on.
Jack Renwick then laced a double to left center, plating both Terriers to put Wofford in front 4-2.
Â
This time it was Penn who responded in quick fashion, with the Quakers hitting another two-run homer in the top of the third inning. The score was even again, this time at four all.
Â
The pitching staffs then settled in, and suddenly the contest turned into a delayed pitchers' duel. After that Penn long ball, no more runs would cross home plate until the bottom of the eighth inning.
Â
Trey Yunger led the eighth off with a single to right field. A balk advanced him to second, and a well-executed sacrifice bunt moved him over to third. With the go-ahead run just 90 feet away, another Quaker miscue proved costly, as a passed ball allowed Yunger to scurry home and put Wofford back in front.
Â
With a one-run lead,
Lucas Mahlstedt came back out to toe the rubber with hopes of shutting the door. A lead-off single for Penn was immediately nixed by a double play on the next batter. A pinch-hit double provided some hope for the Quakers, but Mahlstedt hunkered down and induced a weak ground ball right back to him, which he scooped up and tossed to Dempsey at first base to lock down the series win with a 5-4 triumph.
Â
The Terriers remain at home with a pair of midweeks, beginning with a contest against Georgia State at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Wofford then welcomes Kennesaw State to Russell C. King Field on Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. first pitch.
