Baseball Drops Pitchers’ Duel to Georgia State

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The pitchers took center stage at Russell C. King Field Tuesday afternoon, with runs at a premium for either side. Georgia State would tack on a couple of insurance runs in a wet top of the ninth, but Ryan Galanie's long ball in the sixth was all Wofford got in the game. The Terriers fell to the Panthers, 4-1. Wofford now stands at 6-7 on the season, while Georgia State improves to 8-5.

Dom Marcoccio (1-2) suffered the loss in the contest after pitching 5.0 innings in a starting role. He surrendered two runs on four hits. Luke Stephens tossed an inning in relief, allowing no runs and tallying a strikeout. Holden Wilder hurled 2.1 innings out of the bullpen, allowing two runs on a hit and a walk. He fanned three. Dalton Rhadans finished the game off for the Terriers, pitching the final 0.2 innings.

Georgia State started Camren Landry (1-2), who earned the win after 4.0 innings of work. Cameron Jones (3) recorded the save for the Panthers after starting in the lineup at first base before coming on to pitch the final 2.0 innings.

It was a true pitchers' duel, with Georgia State pitchers accruing 11 strikeouts. Though Wofford's pitchers only punched out four, the Terrier defense was stout with no errors committed.

Wofford out-hit Georgia State 8-6, but the Terriers left eight men on base as opposed to just four stranded Panthers. Ryan Galanie led the offensive charge for Wofford, knocking two hits, including a solo blast to right. He also drew a walk, reaching base three total times and extending his on-base streak to 13 games. Continuing their thieving ways, Jack Renwick and Trey Yunger each stole a base in the contest after reaching with a base hit.

Georgia State dealt the first blow in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly. The following inning, a single to left field drove home one more. The Panthers led 2-0 after three.

Scoring was hard to come by as both staffs were dealing. Ryan Galanie finally helped Wofford break through in the bottom of the sixth when he lifted a ball over the right field wall for his fifth homer of the season. The Terriers were down by just a single run, 2-1.

However, the Panthers secured two important insurance runs in the top of the ninth with the rain starting to come down. A double down the left field line brought home a run, and then a triple to right field scored another. Georgia State locked things down in the bottom of the frame, securing the 4-1 win over the Terriers.

Wofford will be back in action at Russell C. King Field tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. as the Terriers host the Kennesaw State Owls in more midweek action. Note that the first pitch time as been pushed back from its originally scheduled 5:00 p.m. due to forecasted inclement weather earlier in the day.
