SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It was the
Jack Renwick show at Russell C. King Field Friday night as the sophomore infielder belted a grand slam for four of his career-high six RBI and also swiped home plate en route to a 13-2 rout of ETSU by the 25
th-ranked Wofford baseball team. The Terriers improve to 26-9 and remain a perfect 5-0 in the SoCon. The Buccaneers drop to 20-10, 3-2 in league play.
Wofford extends its winning streak overall to six games with the result. This marks now 13-straight wins at home for the Terriers. With a 2-0 series edge, Wofford has claimed its eighth-straight series victory of the season to remain perfect in weekend series.
Wofford starter
Josh Vitus (3-3) earned the win after 6.0 solid innings on the mound. He allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits with no walks and five punchouts.
Coulson Buchanan (1) closed out the final 3.0 frames to secure his first-career save. He surrendered just one hit, striking out five and walking none. The tandem pelted the strike zone to combine for 10 strikeouts. Both hurlers secured strikes with over 75 percent of their pitches, with Vitus notching 84 percent and Buchanan chiming in just below with 77.8 percent.
ETSU's starter, Colby Stuart (3-1), was tabbed with the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) over just 2.2 innings of work.
Though knocking just three more hits, 11-8, and committing two more errors, 3-1, the Terriers were able to secure an 11-run triumph thanks in part to how they worked the count. Wofford's hitters drew eight free passes in the contest, while the Terrier pitchers did not issue a single walk to an ETSU batter. Stolen bases also played a large factor, as Wofford swiped six bags but did not let the Buccaneers steal any.
Jack Renwick stole the show with a good Friday night performance, notching two hits with both going for extra bases. One was a two-RBI double, but the big one was his grand slam in the third inning. It was the first grand slam of the season for Wofford and Renwick's fourth homer of the season. His six RBI led the squad as they were a career high for the sophomore and the most in a game by a Terrier this season. He tied for the team lead on the night with two stolen bases.
John Dempsey paced the squad with his four hits in five at-bats, notching three RBI himself.
Brice Martinez also tallied two base hits as the only other Terrier with a multi-hit game. Like Renwick, Martinez swiped a pair of bags.
With a walk each,
Brennen Dorighi and
Nolen Hester both extended their on-base streaks to 16 and 15, respectively.
ETSU struck first in the top of the second inning when a throwing error allowed a run to score.
Wofford immediately pulled level in the bottom of the frame. A sacrifice fly by
Trey Yunger scored that tying run to make it a 1-1 game.
The Terriers turned the power on in the third inning to claim the lead.
John Dempsey singled to right center to put the Terriers in front. After a walk and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases,
Jack Renwick stepped up to the plate looking to extend the lead. After a first-pitch ball, the right-handed slugger got the pitch he wanted on the second and launched it over the left field fence for a grand slam, loudly extending the advantage to 6-1.
In the fourth inning, Dempsey struck again when he legged out an infield RBI single to make the score 7-1.
A single to right field in the top of the sixth allowed ETSU to pull a little closer, making the margin 7-2.
However, another big inning for Wofford in the seventh would essentially siphon any momentum the Buccaneers had acquired and effectively ice the game. With two runners on, it was Renwick again with a loud base knock, this time a double into the left-center gap for two runs. After stealing third base, he decided he wasn't done and took off for home. He slid under the tag to complete the home burglary and snag another Terrier run. Wofford wasn't done there as
Cameron Gill would later single through the left side to plate Yunger and give Wofford an 11-2 lead.
Dempsey struck once more with an RBI single to right center in the eighth, and Galanie lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Dempsey for the final run of the ballgame. The contest concluded with a 13-2 Wofford triumph.
Wofford and ETSU are set to face off once more tomorrow in the series finale. The Terriers aim for their fourth sweep of the season with a first pitch time scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field. Note the time change as the start time is now one hour later than the originally-scheduled 2:00 p.m.
