DALLAS – Up 9-0 in the middle of the seventh after a five-run explosion, the Wofford baseball team appeared poised to run away with the second game of the series at Horner Ballpark. However, #18 Dallas Baptist battled back with five runs of its own in the bottom of that frame, though the Terriers held on to claim the Saturday afternoon affair 9-6.
Â
Wofford improves to 20-8 with the result, extending the win streak to eight games. It's the first eight-game winning streak since 2018 (March 7-18), and it ties for the longest in Wofford's Division I era with that 2018 streak and two others – 2015 and 2007. The second consecutive ranked win marks the first time the Terriers have won multiple ranked games in a season, and subsequently this is the first series victory over a ranked team in Wofford history. The series victory is the sixth-straight to begin the season, as Wofford remains perfect in the campaign and extends its program-best streak of series wins to begin a season.
Â
Terrier starter
Josh Vitus (2-3) earned the win after tossing 5.0 stellar innings, shutting out the Patriots and holding them to five hits. He punched out five and walked no one.
Coulson Buchanan was the middle arm for Wofford, throwing 3.0 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits, striking out one.
Dalton Rhadans (6) picked up the save for a second-straight game by shutting the door in the final inning. He allowed only a hit, but retired the other three batters he faced, one via the strikeout, to close out the contest.
Â
The loss was tabbed to DBU starter Luke Eldred (3-2) after he surrendered three runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings of work.
Â
Wofford out-hit Dallas Baptist 18-14, with six Terriers recording multi-hit outings.
Brennen Dorighi led the way with a career-best four hits in all four at-bats, driving home three runs. He was a triple shy of the cycle, recording two doubles and a home run.
Lawson Hill tallied three hits, two doubles, to move into fourth on Wofford's all-time career hits list with 240.
Brice Martinez also knocked three hits, a career-high.
John Dempsey extended his on-base streak to 15 games with his two-hit effort, and
Jack Renwick knocked home two RBI with his two hits, one a triple.
Â
The Terriers struck first for a second consecutive game, with
Jack Renwick singling to center and moving over to third after a pair of wild pitches.
Ryan Galanie then dropped a double into right field to bring Renwick home for the game's first run.
Â
An inning later,
Brennen Dorighi played long ball to tack on another. His solo home run to right field led-off the inning, giving Wofford a 2-0 lead after two.
Â
The Terriers added to their lead again in the fourth, manufacturing another run.
Lawson Hill started the inning with an infield single, and he advanced to third after Dorighi singled up the middle. With runners on the corners,
Nolen Hester laid down a well-placed sacrifice bunt to plate Hill and give Wofford a 3-0 advantage.
Â
Wofford utilized baserunning to score a fourth run in the top of the sixth. Dorighi ripped a double down the right field line to start things off, and Hester followed suit with a single to shallow left center to create runners on first and third with one out. Late in
Cameron Gill's plate appearance, Hester took off for second on a delayed steal. The throw down created a rundown that ultimately saw Hester tagged out, but it allowed Dorighi to race home, extending the lead to 4-0.
Â
The wheels began to fall off in the top of the seventh for the Patriots, as Wofford pushed across five runs to open up the ballgame. Renwick tripled down the left field line to bring home two runs, and two batters later Hill doubled into left center for a third run. Dorighi followed with his own double, lifting it into right field to plate two and make the score 9-0.
Â
But just as Wofford seemed to be pulling away, Dallas Baptist's bats woke up for a big five-run frame to respond. Back-to-back RBI singles opened the scoring, and a two-RBI triple pushed across two runs. The scoring concluded with one more RBI single into left, bringing the Patriots right back into the game with the score standing at 9-5 after seven.
Â
Dallas Baptist kept fighting back, sending a solo homer over the left field fence in the eighth to pull within three runs. The score was 9-6 in favor of Wofford entering the ninth.
Â
The margin would stand there, as
Dalton Rhadans came on to stifle the Patriot comeback hopes and lock down the 9-6 triumph for Wofford.
Â
The Terriers will be back in action in Dallas tomorrow afternoon for game three of the series. Wofford seeks the series sweep with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m. ET.
