Wofford Baseball Can’t Complete Comeback, Falls 7-4 to #18 DBU in Sunday Finale

The Terriers still claim the series 2-1 over the nationally ranked Patriots

DALLAS – It was a tale of two halves at Horner Ballpark Sunday afternoon, as though the Wofford baseball team controlled the first four and a half innings, the #18 Dallas Baptist Patriots found life and took charge for the final four to salvage a game three win and avoid being swept. The Terriers still claim the series 2-1 despite the loss, but they drop to 20-9 on the season. The Patriots improve to 17-10.

Wofford reliever Luke Stephens (0-1) was charged for the loss, his first of the season, after allowing four runs (two earned) in 0.1 innings on three hits. Matthew Marchal started for the Terriers, tossing the first 5.0 innings and allowing just two hits. Unfortunately for him, they were both home runs, though those two runs were the only ones he allowed. He struck out seven and walked none, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth before the first home run broke it up. Stephens was the first relief arm before giving way to Holden Wilder, who pitched 1.0 inning of shutout ball, giving up just a walk and two hits. Clay Schwaner hurled the final 1.2 innings, surrendering just a run alongside one hit and one walk, striking out one.

The win was credited to Dallas Baptist reliever Zane Russell (2-0) after he pitched 2.1 innings, allowing a run. Chandler Arnold (6) closed the game out for the save, tossing the last 2.0 innings.

The Terriers held a slight hit advantage, 9-8, but they were bitten by errors, making three defensive miscues as opposed to just one by the Patriots. Lawson Hill led the way with three hits for the Terriers in four at-bats, driving home a run and scoring once. Ryan Galanie also tallied a multi-hit day with two base knocks. Brennen Dorighi kept his power trip up, as his lone hit went the distance for his second-straight game with a long ball. It was a three-run homer, as those RBI paced the team in the contest. Though held hitless, John Dempsey worked a free pass to extend his on-base streak to 16 games, tying for the longest by a Terrier this season. He also stole a base, the lone swipe of the game for the Terriers.

Wofford broke through in the top of the fourth inning to deal the first blow yet again. Ryan Galanie singled through the left side, and Lawson Hill dropped a single of his own into left to place two runners on base. Brennen Dorighi immediately brought them home along with himself, launching a three-run bomb to left center. The Terriers led 3-0.

Dallas Baptist pulled to within a run in the bottom of the fifth with some yardwork of its own. Back-to-back solo shots broke up Matthew Marchal's no-hit bid and cut the score to 3-2.

The Terriers promptly got one of those runs back in the top of the sixth. A Galanie single set the stage for Hill, who doubled to right field to extend Wofford's lead to 4-2.

The Patriots kept riding their momentum, storming back to take the lead in the bottom of the frame. Two RBI singles tied the game, and an RBI groundout plated the go-ahead run. A fielding error on a pick-off attempt allowed another run to score, making the margin 6-4 in favor of the Patriots after six.

Dallas Baptist tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth by way of an RBI triple to right center that Trey Yunger almost secured in a diving attempt, but unfortunately, he was not able to complete the play. The score was 7-4 Patriots heading into the ninth.

Wofford put up a fight in the top of the ninth, falling down to its final strike on three-straight batters. With two outs, the first such moment saw Brice Martinez work a walk. Gunnar Johnson came on to pinch-hit, and with two strikes he sent a single into center to keep the comeback hopes alive. The batting order flipped back over to the top, with Trey Yunger representing the potential tying run and falling behind 1-2, where he ultimately flied out to right field. The Terrier comeback attempt fell short, as the Patriots held on for the 7-4 win.

Wofford remains in the Lone Star state to conclude its road trip with a midweek matchup at Tarleton State Tuesday night. The Terriers aim to bounce back with a 7:00 p.m. ET first pitch in Stephenville, Texas.
