SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team held the second scheduled scrimmage of fall practice on Saturday morning at Gibbs Stadium as the season opener is two weeks away. The team was on the field for just over two hours as they ran approximately 75 plays.
"We still have a long way to go to reach the level that we want to play at as a football program," said head coach
Josh Conklin. "The two-minute passing offense was good today, but we really need to get our running game going. Defensively things are starting to come together and we are seeing some good things from the guys up front as well."
The practice began with a short individual segment of drills followed by work on the kickoff return unit. The team then worked on the red zone, running one play which was followed by a field goal attempt. The trio of kickers –
Atkins Roberts,
Devery Cagle and
Bridger Jones – made seven-of-eight attempts.
In the first three drives of the live scrimmage, the defense came up with big plays, including a forced fumble by John Harrington that was picked up by
Tahir Annoor and returned for a touchdown.
Eli Purcell added a pass break-up, while
Chuck Smith had a tackle for loss.
On the next drive,
Bryce Corriston ran for a pair of first downs with one going for 30 yards. The drive ended with a 37-yard field goal by
Atkins Roberts.
Jimmy Weirick found
Landon Parker for a 15-yard first down, but a tackle for loss by
Chuck Smith and an incomplete pass ended the drive.
Cade Rice added a first down pass to
Kyle Watkins.
Running the two-minute offense with 1:33 on the clock,
Jimmy Weirick had a first down pass caught by
Ryan Ingram and then he found
Landon Parker for a 30-yard gain. Weirick ended the drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Parker.
Cade Rice had a first down pass caught by
Dillon Droze but the drive ended with an interception by
Damien Curtis.
After a special teams segment working on punt,
Jimmy Weirick connected with R.J. Khayo for a 30-yard first down. After a first down catch by
Jordan Davis, the drive stalled with tackles for loss by
John Boyles and
Brandon Maina.
Kyle Parsons and
Ryan Stephens added first down runs and
Cade Rice had a completion to
Kyle Watkins for a first down. On the following drive, Rice had a first down pass completed to
Garrett Vernon and
Kyle Parsons added a ten-yard first down run. The final two drives of the scrimmage were run primarily by freshmen and sophomores, which ended with an interception by
R.J. Brunson.
After an off day on Sunday, the Terriers will continue preparations for the season opener with an 8:30 a.m. practices on Monday and Tuesday.
