Spartanburg, S.C.- Junior
Corey Tripp sank two free throws with two seconds remaining to put Wofford men's basketball ahead of High Point and staved off the final Panther possession to seal the 99-98 Veterans Day victory.
Free throws played a pivotal role for both teams as there were a combined 84 free throws shot- a major reason why the lead changed hands 12 times throughout the course of the game. Wofford's 36 attempts from the line is a team high since shooting 43 attempts at VMI on February 5, 2020.
Tripp's pair of free throws punctuated an explosive second half from the Terriers who put up 53 points on 53.3% shooting from the field and a blistering 8-for-17 from beyond the arc. Junior
Dillon Bailey was the Terrier primarily responsible for the second half charge scoring 16 of his 20 points in the half on 4-for-8 shooting, 3-for-6 three-point shooting and 5-for-7 at the free throw line.
No stranger to high volume scoring, the junior out of Bentonville, Arkansas, scored 20+ points eight times prior to donning the old gold and black and is the first Terrier to put up 20+ points in either of his first two games since Fletcher Magee scored 22 in his collegiate debut against Missouri back on November 13, 2015.
Joining Bailey in double figures were six of his teammates including all four Terriers coming off the bench. Freshman guard
Quentin Meza was perfect from the floor and contributed three three-pointers in his first official action against division one competition and fellow freshman
Jeremy Lorenz followed up his double-double against Brevard with a healthy 12 point, three rebound, one steal and one block stat line.
Defensively Wofford stymied High Point from the perimeter- holding the Panthers to just 3-for-15 on three-point attempts after the Panthers buried St. Andrews in its season opener with 21 three-point field goals.
Other Notes of Interest
No Terrier committed more than two turnovers on the day and only committed seven as a team after 15 turnovers against Brevard- a return to form for the school that was second in the Southern Conference, and 43rd in the nation, in fewest turnovers per game last season.
Sophomore
Chase Martin and junior
Jackson Sivills led the way rebounding for Wofford with six boards a piece. For Martin the six boards represent a new career high and for Sivills is one shy of tying his career high against division one competition.
With the win, Wofford moves to a perfect 8-0 in known games in Spartanburg against the Panthers (seven games prior to 1959 do not have a recorded venue) and is now 20-5 against the current Big South since 2010.
Up Next
Now 2-0 for the first time since the 2020-21 season, Wofford will be away from Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium for the next eight games beginning Tuesday, November 14, with a trip to Knoxville, Tennessee, to face the Tennessee Volunteers before meeting former Wofford Head Coach Mike Young's Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday, November 19. Tip off for the Tennessee game is slated for 6:30 and be streamed on SEC Network Plus.
