SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced today its selections for February players of the month with Wofford's
Ryan Galanie earning the baseball honor. The selections are made by the league office.
Â
This is the first monthly honor of Galanie's career. He is the first Terrier to be named SoCon Player of the Month since
Lawson Hill garnered the selection for April of last season.
Â
"Ryan started this season as well as any position player we've had in recent memory," said head coach
Todd Interdonato. "We felt he was one of the best players in the region during the last month of '22, and it is great to see him begin his '23 season in such impressive fashion. Overlooked has been the position change he has made and the effort he has put into becoming the best defensive first-baseman he can be. He has been incredibly selfless and a phenomenal teammate through his success. We are excited to have one of our own get this recognition to start the season. He is one of the main reasons we are off to the start we are as a team."
Â
Galanie opened the 2023 campaign on fire, quickly snagging the SoCon's first Player of the Week honor of the season after hitting .818 on opening weekend. Over the entire month of February, Galanie hit .517 with a .932 slugging mark. He tallied 15 hits, three of which were home runs. Two of those round-trippers came in the same game, in which he lifted two long balls in the Sunday finale against Kent State on Feb. 26. Those homers were a three-run blast and a grand slam, giving him a team-high seven RBI in the contest.
Â
The senior drove in 15 runs while scoring nine himself. A native of Mason, Ohio, Galanie added three stolen bases, four walks drawn and an errorless fielding effort at first base with 71 putouts.
Â
These efforts paced Wofford to a 7-1 record in the opening month. After falling on opening night, the Terriers rattled off seven-straight wins to finish the month. That streak has since stretched to 12, one shy of the overall program record set in 1983.
Â
The 12-1 Terriers open a three-game series against Cincinnati tonight. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
