Football Opens Spring Practice

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team returned to the field on Tuesday night to open spring practice. It was the first of fifteen scheduled practices for the Terriers.

On the first day the Terriers worked out in helmets on the lower practice fields for ninety minutes before heading to the turf intramural field for the final team portion of practice. The practice focused primarily on the fundamentals. Team schemes were implemented on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

"It feels awesome to be out here," said head coach Shawn Watson. "This is why we do what we do – being on the fields and teaching. We had a really good winter overall. We had some good scheme evaluation and the players have done a great job in the weight room. I really like where are guys are.

"For us the spring it is all about fundamentals and technique," continued Watson. "It is about mastering our scheme and getting it up to speed. We need to more efficient on both sides of the ball. Coming out of our scheme evaluations there are things we are going to address both offensively and defensively. We are going to be adding some things and making the things that we do better."

The team is expected to return fourteen starters – five on offense, seven on defense and two specialists. Among those returns are running back Kyle Parsons, who led the team in rushing, and linebacker David Powers, who led the team in tackles. On the injury front, approximately 15 players were held out or limited in practice.

The Terriers will return to the field on Thursday and Saturday to complete the first week of practice.
