SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team poured it on early and never looked back Saturday afternoon, topping the VMI Keydets 20-6 at Russell C. King Field. Wofford improves to 16-6 (1-1 SoCon) while VMI dips to 14-10 (1-1 SoCon).
Â
Mike Eggert (2-1) earned the win out of the bullpen, hurling 2.0 innings with three runs allowed and a pair of strikeouts.
Charlie Weber started, tossing 3.0 innings with no runs on four hits, and he struck out a batter.
Â
VMI starter Robert Velasquez (2-2) suffered the loss after surrendering eight runs on six hits and two walks in 2.0 innings of work.
Â
The Wofford offense was firing on all cylinders, notching season highs in both hits (18) and runs (20). The four Terrier home runs were also a new season best.
Â
Every Terrier starter tallied at least one hit, and seven notched multi-hit outings.
Dixon Black led the charge with four hits, plating two runs.
David Wiley drove home three runs on two hits.
Cameron Gill and
Jack Renwick both recorded two hits and two RBI. But it was
Gunnar Johnson who shined at driving in runs, securing a career-high seven RBI on two hits.
Â
Marshall Toole's lone hit was a homer.
Ryan Galanie and
Jack Renwick also clubbed long balls, and Wofford's other one was off the bat of
Gunnar Johnson, his first-career homer.
Â
The Terriers wasted no time getting on the board, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first.
Brice Martinez began the party with an RBI single, and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch brought in another.
Gunnar Johnson's double scored three, and
Jack Renwick lifted a two-run bomb to make the score 7-0.
Â
Ryan Galanie hit a solo shot in the second, and two more homers came in the third. Johnson clubbed a three-run clout, and Toole also smacked a solo four-bagger to make the margin 12-0 after three.
Â
In the fourth, VMI finally got on the board with a pair of runs to make the score 12-2.
Â
But the Terriers were relentless, adding four more in the bottom of the frame to extend the lead to 16-2.
Â
The Keydets claimed a run in the fifth, but the Terriers tacked on two more in the bottom thanks to a
David Wiley triple and Gill single. With a Black sacrifice fly in the sixth, the Terrier lead ballooned to 19-3.
Â
A VMI solo homer in the eight was nixed by a Black RBI single in the bottom of the frame. Down 20-4, the Keydets manufactured two more runs in the top of the ninth. But
O'Kelly McWilliams IV stayed firm on the bump to close out the contest and lock down Wofford's 20-6 triumph.
Â
Wofford and VMI match up once tomorrow afternoon in the rubber match of a 1-1 series. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
