Baseball Downs Sacred Heart 5-1 to Complete Sweep

Terriers club pair of two-run homers in Sunday finale

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Behind a pair of two-run homers in the opening inning, the Wofford baseball team completed a sweep of Sacred Heart with a 5-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers improve to 10-1 while the Pioneers drop to 3-6.

Wofford is now riding a 10-game winning streak, matching its Division I record set last season.

Terrier starter Coulson Buchanan (2-0) earned the win after 5.0 shutout innings. The sophomore gave up just three hits and struck out six. Branton Little pitched 1.2 innings with two hits and no runs, striking out three. Luke Stephens closed out the contest, pitching the final 2.1 innings. He gave up two hits and one run with three punchouts. The three hurlers totaled 12 strikeouts and did not issue a walk.

Sacred Heart starter Cooper Thompson (0-2) suffered the loss after throwing just 1.0 inning, surrendering four runs on two hits and two walks.

The Terrier offense was led by Ryan Galanie, who notched two hits and drove in two runs. Those runs came via a two-run homer. Dixon Black also lifted a two-run home run, his lone hit of the contest. Wofford's other RBI came off the bat of Cameron Gill. After working 23 walks in yesterday's doubleheader, the Terrier hitters earned another five today.

Wofford struck first with authority in the first inning. Marshall Toole worked a lead-off walk, and Ryan Galanie immediately launched a home run to right center to plate them both. Brice Martinez was put on with another free pass, and a fielder's choice kept a runner on base with now one out. But Sacred Heart was hit with some déjà vu when Dixon Black blasted Wofford's second two-run homer of the frame. After an inning, the score stood 4-0 in favor of Wofford.

The Terriers tacked on another run in the fourth. Black reached after a fielding error, he advanced to third with a sacrifice bunt and fly out. Then Cameron Gill laced a single to center, bringing Black home for a 5-0 lead.

Neither offense could get anything going from there until the ninth. The Pioneers opened the frame with a pair of singles, and a groundout brought home their first run of the ballgame. But Luke Stephens held firm on the mound, striking out the final two batters to ice the game and seal Wofford's 5-1 victory.

The Terriers will be back in action with a pair of midweek contests, their first games away from home this season. Wofford will travel to Rock Hill for a match-up at Winthrop on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. before a neutral site contest in Greenville on Wednesday. Wofford and Michigan State will battle at Fluor Field with a 1:30 p.m. first pitch.
