Baseball Downs Eagles 8-0

Terriers earn first road win in shutout fashion

ROCK HILL, S.C. – In Wofford's first road game of the season, the Terrier pitchers were electric in shutting out the Winthrop Eagles Tuesday night for an 8-0 triumph at the Winthrop Ballpark. Wofford improves to 11-1 with the result while Winthrop drops to 7-6.

The 11-game win streak is the longest in Wofford's Division I era, topping the 10-game mark set last season.

In his first-career start, junior Mike Eggert (1-0) earned the win after throwing 3.0 innings with one strikeout and two hits. Lucas Mahlstedt (2) notched a six-inning save after polishing off the rest of the game in relief, allowing just three hits and striking out a career-high seven batters.

Winthrop starter Caleb Jones (0-1) suffered the loss after 3.2 innings of work, surrendering four runs on four hits.

The Terriers totaled eight hits, three of which came off the bat of Marshall Toole. Ryan Galanie also notched a multi-hit outing with two, and he added an RBI. Trey Yunger scored a pair of runs after reaching base three times via the hit-by-pitch. Reigning SoCon Player of the Week David Wiley recorded Wofford's lone extra-base hit with a triple, driving in a run.

Wofford opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second. David Wiley's triple brought home Trey Yunger to get the Terriers on the board, and Cameron Gill's single scored Wiley for the early 2-0 lead.

The Terriers added two more in the fourth. Jack Renwick singled to left to plate Yunger. Renwick would steal second, and then a wild pitch that kicked away from the catcher allowed him to race home from second.

Wofford padded its lead with three more in the seventh. Ryan Galanie singled to plate a run, and with runners on the corners Brice Martinez laid down a sacrifice bunt. The pitcher fumbled the ball, allowing Martinez to reach and Marshall Toole to score. Dixon Black capped the inning with a sacrifice fly, extending the Wofford lead to 7-0.

The Terriers tacked on another run in the eighth with a delayed double steal attempt. Though Toole was tagged out in the rundown, Gill scurried home to make the margin 8-0.

Lucas Mahlstedt continued to roll on the mound, shutting down the Winthrop hitters to seal the Wofford win, 8-0.

Wofford is back in action tomorrow afternoon with a neutral site affair at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. The Terriers will battle the Michigan State Spartans at 1:30 p.m.
