GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team extended its winning streak with a 12-9 win over the Michigan State Spartans at Fluor Field Wednesday afternoon, powered by a pair of long balls off the bat of
Dixon Black. The Terriers are now 12-1 with the win, while the Spartans drop to 5-7.
Â
Wofford has extended its Division I-era record win streak to 12 games, one shy of the program's overall record of 13 set in 1983.
Â
Zac Cowan (3-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings as the first hurler out of Wofford's bullpen. He surrendered two runs while striking out two batters.
Matthew Marchal started for the Terriers, tossing 3.1 innings with four punchouts and only one run allowed.
Luke Stephens locked down the win at the end with the final 0.2 innings, allowing only one hit.
Â
Spartan starter Nolan Higgins (1-1) suffered the loss after giving up nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits in 2.2 innings of work.
Â
Four Terriers tallied two-hit days, led by
Dixon Black. Both of his hits were home runs, his second-career multi-homer game and first as a Terrier. He drew a pair of walks to reach base four times.
Ryan Galanie reached five times with two hits and three walks, extending his on-base streak to 38 games.
Trey Yunger and
Cameron Gill also notched two-hit affairs, with Gill adding two RBI.
Marshall Toole and
Brice Martinez both knocked in a pair of runs as well.
Â
Despite being out-hit 15-11, the Terriers again utilized patience at the plate to create offense. Wofford hitters worked nine walks on the day, while the Terrier arms issued only three free passes.
Â
Wofford opened the scoring with a big six-run inning in the top of the second.
Dixon Black got things rolling with a lead-off home run, a 101 mph solo shot to left center that traveled 386 feet. Later in the frame, a wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed
Trey Yunger to score.
Cameron Gill's single down the left field line brought in a pair, and he would score with a steal of home on a well-executed delayed double steal. The scoring was capped with an RBI sacrifice bunt from
Brice Martinez. After batting around, the Terriers held an early 6-0 lead.
Â
The Terriers tacked on a few more in the following frame with a pair of doubles.
Marshall Toole's double off the wall brought home two runs, and
Ryan Galanie sent one to right center to plate Toole. The Terrier lead stood at 9-0.
Â
Michigan State finally cracked onto the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the third, making the margin 9-1.
Â
With a Martinez RBI single in the top of the fifth, Wofford reach double-digits, extending the lead to 10-1. But the Spartans cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame, as a two-run homer made the margin 10-3.
Â
In the top of the eighth, Black struck again by launching another solo shot over the Green Monster. The 105 mph, 395-feet bomb bounced off the New York Life Building and lifted Wofford's lead to 11-3.
Â
The Spartans responded with their own solo blast in the bottom of the frame, making the score 11-4.
Â
Wofford grabbed another run in the top of the ninth with a wild pitch.
Connor Larson raced home to make the score 12-4.
Â
Michigan State attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, pushing five runs across to tighten the affair. But
Luke Stephens came on to ice the contest, securing the final two outs and the 12-9 victory over the Spartans.
Â
Wofford returns to action this weekend with a three-game home series. The Terriers welcome Cincinnati to town, with game one set for 5:30 p.m. Friday evening at Russell C. King Field.
