ROCK HILL, S.C.- Leading by one goal at the half, the Wofford women's lacrosse team used a strong third quarter on the way to a 15-13 win over Winthrop on Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field. The Terriers had seven goals in the third quarter, including a stretch of four straight after the game was tied at nine each.
The Terriers were led by
Emma Krasinski with four goals, while
Emma Stalteri and
Addison Witkowski had two goals each.
Leah Hurley had one goal and a team-high three assists. For the Eagles, Ellie Dutton had six goals and two assists.
Wofford got on the board first with a pair of goals by
Emma Krasinski. With 6:12 on the clock in the first quarter, the Eagles scored to make it a 2-1 game. Carly Irvin gave Wofford a 3-1 lead, but at the end of the first quarter the game was tied at 3-3.
Leah Hurley broke the tie with a goal just over a minute into the second quarter for a 4-3 lead for the Terriers. The game was tied at 4 for much of the quarter until
Carlie Cutinella scored with 4:11 remaining for a 5-4 Wofford advantage.
Emma Krasinski added her third goal of the game a minute later to make it a 6-4 lead. The Eagles got one goal back and at the half the Terriers had a 6-5 advantage.
In the second half, Winthrop tied the game at six with a man-up goal at 13:33 and had an 8-6 lead with 10:57 on the clock. Wofford answered with three straight goals to regain the lead at 9-8 with 7:42 left in the third quarter. After Winthrop tied it up at 9-9, Wofford once again answered and had four straight goals for a 13-9 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Winthrop opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals to make it a 13-11 game.
Addison Witkowski scored for Wofford at 9:48 for a 14-11 lead, but the lead was cut to 14-12 with 8:19 left in the quarter. After neither team scored for seven minutes,
Brenna Duley scored with 1:13 remaining to push the Wofford lead to 15-12. The Eagles added a goal with 22 seconds left for the final margin.
Wofford (4-6, 1-1 Big South) picked up a win over Winthrop (3-6, 0-2 Big South) for the first time, as the Eagles had won the previous three meetings.
Ella Smithers (4-0) played the first three quarters in goal for Wofford and earned the win, with
Aislinn Washburn playing the fourth quarter. Emma Calhoun (1-1) had the loss in goal with seven saves.
