Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women’s Lacrosse rallies again and picks up win in second overtime

Stalteri’s second overtime goal seals yet another Wofford comeback win

Spartanburg S.C.- Wofford trailed the Longwood Lancers 17-13 with just 12:05 to play and rallied once again for their third fourth quarter comeback win of the season as the Terriers scored five in a row for an 18-17 win.

After being down 17-13 late, Hurley started the comeback for the Terriers, scoring with 8:49 to play. Carley Irvin followed that up just 61 seconds later to cut the deficit to two. Another goal from both Hurley and Irvin evened the score with 4:45 to play. The game would go to overtime tied at 17 after neither team scored in the final 4:45.

In the sudden death overtime the Lancers won the initial draw control but committed a turnover. Wofford then possessed the ball until a Hurley shot was saved by Carlile with five seconds left.

In the second overtime period Longwood gained possession quickly, and a shot attempt from Sophia Passa drilled the post and bounced away. The Lancers maintained possession and got another shot at the goal, but Washburn came up with the save and led to the Terriers clearing the ball.

That clear would set up Stalteri, who drove through the Lancer defense with 37 seconds left in second overtime and scored the sudden death goal.

Wofford (5-6, 2-1 Big South) was led by Irvin with four goals while Hurley, Stalteri and Emma Krasinski added three each. Cutinella and Olivia Abe also scored and assisted twice while Addison Witkowski got one goal.

Longwood (3-7, 1-2 Big South) was led by Sophia Passa with six goals and Lauren Cerretani with five goals. Riley McDonald had seven points with four goals and three assists for the Lancers.

"We had a lot of hustle and a big team effort at the end which is what we needed," Irvin said.
Goalie Aislinn Washburn picked up the win in goal while Amelia Carlile got the loss for Longwood. Washburn made 11 saves in the winning effort, including one in overtime.

"Everybody just worked hard for the entire game, and we had a lot of big plays especially at the end to get us through for a big win. We're just really excited to be back at home for the first time in a month for a conference game," Washburn said.

This was the Terriers' third fourth quarter comeback that has led to a win this season.

"It's got to go down to conditioning at this point" head coach Jessie Aguglia said. "I think we had a lot of opportunities, and I don't know if we played our best game but we are very happy with the effort. Obviously, it's great to come out with a win. I don't think we have a give-up attitude, so even if we go down a couple we know we have the ability to comeback so we can always rely on that."

The game started with plenty of scoring as both teams scored six goals in the first quarter.

Wofford led 9-8 in the second quarter, but a three-goal run by the Lancers gave them an 11-9 halftime lead.

Cerretani opened the second half scoring before Hurley cut the deficit back to two. However, two more goals from Longwood gave them a 14-10 in the third quarter. Two goals from Krasinski and one from Abe cut that deficit back to 15-13 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter Longwood scored the first two before a 4-0 run over the final 8:49 of the fourth quarter to set up overtime and the Stalteri game winner.
