Baseball Races Past Presbyterian, 18-1

Terriers tally 15 hits, eight walks in the contest

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team poured it on early and never looked back Tuesday evening, claiming an 18-1 win over Presbyterian at Russell C. King Field. Wofford improves to 24-8 with the triumph, and Presbyterian drops to 13-21.

Terrier starter Matthew Marchal (6-1) received the win after 1.2 scoreless innings to open the contest. He struck out one. Seven different pitchers toed the rubber, with all but one recording scoreless outings. Branton Little, Dom Marcoccio and Holden Wilder each recorded a pair of punchouts.

Presbyterian tossed eight pitchers, with starter Mason McDaniel (2-2) being tagged with the loss. He surrendered three runs on three hits and two walks in 1.0 inning.

Seven of the nine Terrier starters recorded a hit, and all nine reached base. Ryan Galanie led the charge with three hits and three runs knocked in. Dixon Black also had three hits with two RBI. Marshall Toole, Trey Yunger and David Wiley each tallied a pair of hits, with the latter two both recording four RBI. One of Yunger's hits was a three-run home run.

On top of notching 15 total hits, Wofford batters worked eight walks and got hit by a pitch eight times for 16 free trips on base.

The Terriers wasted no time getting on the board, as Trey Yunger belted a three-run blast to left field in the bottom of the first for a quick 3-0 lead.

In the second, Wofford piled on five more. Yunger hit a sacrifice fly to start the scoring, and Dixon Black doubled down the left field line to plate one more. Brice Martinez notched an RBI single, and one more scored on an error. A Cameron Gill sacrifice fly capped the five-run inning, extending the Terrier lead to 8-0.

David Wiley's bases-clearing triple and Gill's RBI single in the third made the score12-0.

After a quiet fourth, the Terriers exploded for six more in the fifth. A passed ball plated a run, and Ryan Galanie doubled home three runners. An RBI single by Black plated one more, and Ben Schulte was hit with the bases loaded to make the margin 18-0.

Presbyterian finally cracked into the scoring column in the sixth with a solo homer, cutting the score to 18-1.

But that was where it stood, and the Terrier bullpen held firm over the final three frames to secure the 18-1 midweek Wofford win.

The Terriers hit the road this weekend for another conference series, traveling to Cullowhee, N.C. for three games against Western Carolina. Game one is set for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 14.
