Baseball Defeats WCU 12-5 on Wet Friday Night

All nine starting Terriers tally a hit en route to series-opening victory

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Despite rain delaying the start of the game, the Wofford baseball team rolled Friday night in game one of the series against Western Carolina once the contest was underway with a 12-5 win at Hennon Stadium. The Terriers needed just two pitchers and were aided by 16 hits with all nine starting batters tallying one. Wofford improves to 25-8 (5-2 SoCon) while WCU falls to 13-19 (3-6 SoCon).

Terrier starter Coulson Buchanan (4-2) earned the win after 5.0 innings of work with five runs allowed on six hits. He struck out six batters. Lucas Mahlstedt (4) tossed the final 4.0 frames, surrendering no runs on just one hit to notch a save on four punchouts.

WCU used five arms in the game, with reliever Gavin Mortenson (0-3) taking the loss after surrendering six runs (none earned) on six hits and a walk in 1.1 innings.

All nine starting batters for the Terriers recorded a hit, and six of the nine notched multiple hits. Trey Yunger led the way with three hits on the night, driving home two runs. Marshall Toole and Dixon Black paced the team with three RBI apiece. Gunnar Johnson added a pair of runs driven in alongside his two hits.

On top of 16 total base knocks, the Terriers worked the walk quite well in the contest. Wofford earned eight total free passes with seven of the nine starters working a walk. Ryan Galanie totaled two (one intentional) in conjunction with his two base hits and an RBI.

After the delayed start, Wofford wasted no time getting on the board. Ryan Galanie and Trey Yunger notched back-to-back hits, Yunger's a double, to put runners on second and third in the top of the first. Dixon Black would ground out, but it allowed Galanie to score for the quick 1-0 lead.

But WCU wasted no time responding, hitting a solo homer in the bottom of the first to tie the contest at 1-1.

The Catamounts pulled in front with three runs in the bottom of the second. An RBI double provided the lead, and they extended it with an RBI groundout and sacrifice fly, making the margin 4-1.

The Terriers exploded for six runs in the fourth to retake the lead. A fielding error plated a run to kick off the scoring, and Marshall Toole followed with a two-run single to left that tied the affair. Galanie's single to right scored Toole for the lead. Later in the frame, Black tripled to push across a pair of runs and extend the new lead to 7-4.

An RBI single for WCU in the bottom of the fifth pulled the Catamounts a little closer, cutting their deficit to 7-5.

In the top of the seventh, the Terriers added a pair to stay out in front. Gunnar Johnson roped an RBI single to center, and an RBI Groundout added one more for the 9-5 score.

Wofford claimed some more insurance runs in the top of the ninth. With the bases juiced, Yunger singled through the left side to score two, and David Wiley's single plated one more for a 12-5 lead entering the bottom of the ninth.

The Catamounts would get a baserunner in their final efforts, but Lucas Mahlstedt held firm, inducing the game-ending double play to seal Wofford's 12-5 triumph.

The two teams are set to square off again tomorrow afternoon in game two of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The game will air regionally on The CW 62 in partnership with Ingles and the Nexstar Media Group as well as being simulcast on ESPN+.
