Baseball Falls to WCU’s Late Rally, 10-9

All nine Terriers record a hit again, but Catamounts secure walk-off win

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The theme of Saturday's game two was rallies, as despite Wofford's rally from an early deficit, headed by Gunnar Johnson's three-run homer, the Western Carolina Catamounts notched a walk-off 10-9 win at Hennon Stadium to even the series with the Terriers. Wofford falls to 25-9 (5-2 SoCon) while WCU improves to 14-19 (4-6 SoCon).

Wofford reliever Luke Stephens (2-3) suffered the loss after allowing three runs in 1.1 innings on four hits with a strikeout. Charlie Weber started for the Terriers, tossing 3.0 innings with five runs allowed on four hits. Sam Stratton delivered 3.0 scoreless frames in relief with only two hits surrendered and two punchouts. Dom Marcoccio bridged the gap before Stephens with 1.1 innings and two runs on one hit with a pair of strikeouts.

Catamount reliever Nick Hyde (1-1) earned the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning, walking one and striking out one.

All nine Terrier starting batters recorded a hit for a second-straight game. Three of those hitters notched multiple hits, led by Ryan Galanie with three. Two of his knocks were doubles, and he added two runs driven in. David Wiley and Cameron Gill each recorded a pair of hits. Brice Martinez drove home two runs, and Dixon Black brought in one. But Gunnar Johnson paced the team with three RBI, all coming on his three-run long ball. Trey Yunger drew a pair of walks in conjunction with his base hit.

For a second consecutive game, the Terriers struck in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Brice Martinez singled through the left side to plate two, giving Wofford the early 2-0 advantage.

But WCU responded immediately in the bottom of the frame, plating four with a single and three-run home run to pull ahead 4-2.

The Catamounts added one more in the third with a sacrifice fly, making their lead 5-2.

Wofford got that run back in the top of the fourth. Marshall Toole singled, and Ryan Galanie followed suit with his second double of the day, driving Toole home to cut the score to 5-3.

The Terriers pulled level in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs. Marshall Toole's sacrifice bunt gave the Catamount defense fits, as an errant throw allowed Jack Renwick to race around the bases and score. Galanie then deposited his third hit of the contest, a single up the middle, to plate Toole and tie the game at 5-5.

Gunnar Johnson powered Wofford to the lead in the seventh. After back-to-back hits put two runners on, Johnson stepped up and delivered a three-run bomb to left, lifting the Terriers to an 8-5 lead.

The Terriers tacked on one more in the top of the eighth with a Dixon Black RBI single, extending the lead to 9-5.

But WCU showed no quit, hitting a three-run homer of its own in the bottom of the eighth to pull within a run, 9-8.

The Catamounts kept fighting, and with two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, a double off the wall allowed both to come around and score for the walk-off 10-9 win.

The teams face off once more tomorrow afternoon in the series finale. The rubber match is slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch. The game will again be aired on The CW 62 in partnership with Ingles and the Nexstar Media Group while being simulcast on ESPN+.
