CULLOWHEE, N.C. – It was all Wofford baseball at Hennon Stadium Sunday afternoon, as the Terriers powered themselves to a 17-6 run-rule victory in seven innings over Western Carolina behind three three-run blasts. Wofford improves to 26-9 (6-3 SoCon) while WCU falls to 14-20 (4-7 SoCon).
Â
Terrier starter
Matthew Marchal (7-1) went the distance, hurling all 7.0 innings with six runs allowed on six hits and five punchouts. He earned his SoCon-leading seventh win of the season.
Â
Catamount starter Dylan Wheeler (2-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks. He pitched just 2.1 innings.
Â
The Terriers just missed out on a third-straight game with all nine batters recording a hit, falling one short. But that batter worked a walk, so all nine did reach base.
Trey Yunger led the squad with three hits and two runs knocked in. Five others recorded two hits, with
Ryan Galanie,
David Wiley and
Gunnar Johnson each driving in three runs. All three did so with a three-run home run as one of their two hits.
Jack Renwick also notched multiple RBI, bringing home two.
Â
Wofford struck first in the top of the first again, utilizing the long ball.
Ryan Galanie started it off with a two-run moonshot to left center to put Wofford on the board.
David Wiley doubled the margin later in the frame with a two-run blast of his own, this one to right center, for the 4-0 lead.
Â
WCU utilized the long ball for itself in the bottom of the frame, as a solo shot cut the score to 4-1.
Â
The Terriers got that run back in the second with a pair of doubles.
Marshall Toole's led off the inning, and
Trey Yunger's brought Toole home for the 5-1 lead.
Â
With the bases loaded in the top of the third,
Jack Renwick hit into a fielder's choice that allowed him to reach and two runners to score. Wofford's lead extended to 7-1.
Â
In the top of the fourth,
Brice Martinez doubled to center field, plating one more run to extend Wofford's lead to 8-1.
Â
The Catamounts found a groove in the bottom of the fourth, plating four. An RBI double started the scoring, and a three-run homer cut their deficit to 8-5.
Â
But Wofford responded with a massive inning of its own in the following frame, scoring a season-high nine runs in the top of the fifth to score in a fifth-straight frame. Toole's sacrifice fly kicked off the party, and Galanie singled home a run to follow. Yunger's single plated one, and an error on the play brought home a second run. Wiley and
Cameron Gill added back-to-back RBI singles before
Gunnar Johnson capped the scoring in style. With two on, the Terrier DH went yard to left for Wofford's third three-run dinger of the game. The score stood at 17-5 for the Terriers.
Â
WCU added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly, but it was too little, too late. Wofford earned the run-rule win, 17-6, to claim the series.
Â
Wofford returns to action Tuesday night for a midweek contest at Winthrop. First pitch in Rock Hill is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
