SPARTANBURG, S.C. - On a senior day clash between the Wofford Terriers and the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon, Wofford was able to use a huge second quarter to take a lead they would not relinquish. After trailing 4-3, Wofford went on a six to zero run to catapult them into the lead in the second quarter. They closed out the game for an-18-12 win at Gibbs Stadium.
The win gave Wofford a program-record sixth win on the season after they tied the previous record of five on April 5 against Longwood.
"We've been building the foundation and we couldn't do it without the senior class," said head coach
Jessie Aguglia. "We knew we would have to start somewhere and it wouldn't be an over night change, we just need to keep building on our success and moving up."
Gardner-Webb (2-11, 1-4 Big South opened the game with two early goals before Wofford (6-8, 3-3 Big South) had goals from
Emma Krasinski and Caitlin Cardillo evened the score at two.
The Runnin' Bulldogs responded with two goals before
Emma Krasinski and
Olivia Abe evened the game at four after one quarter. Across the first 4:58 of the second quarter, the Terriers added six goals to take a 9-4 lead and took an 11-6 lead into the halftime break.
In the second quarter Wofford had two goals from
Carley Irvin and
Leah Hurley, while
Emma Krasinski,
Carlie Cutinella, and
Emma Gentile added one each.
After Gardner-Webb opened the third quarter with two goals, Irvin and Abe got the Wofford lead to 13-8. After the Runnin' Bulldogs added a ninth goal, Wofford added four consecutive goals. Gardner-Webb led the fourth quarter 3-1 but Wofford still controlled the pace as they sealed an 18-12 win.
"I think everyone came together and played hard," said Aguglia. "It was an emotional day recognizing all ten of our seniors. They did a good job of making sure that making sure our priority was winning this game first and celebrating them second."
Emma Krasinski led the game with five goals. Wofford also got three each from
Carlie Cutinella and
Leah Hurley.
"Knowing that this was a huge game for a number of reasons our teammates were super supportive. This was a really huge day and huge game, and I could not let my team down," Krasinski said.
Wofford got three groundballs each from
Ainsleigh Mancini,
Addison Witkowski and
Barrett Rowe.
Senior goalie
Aislinn Washburn got the win in net while playing 48 minutes.
Ella Smithers played the final 12 minutes.
The loss went to Gardner-Webb goalie Danielle Burke who played all 60 minutes.
