SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite a career-high 8.0 solid innings from
Coulson Buchanan, the Wofford baseball team dropped its series opener Friday evening to Samford 3-2 at Russell C. King Field with runs at a premium for both teams. Wofford falls to 27-10 (6-4 SoCon) while Samford improves to 22-16 (8-2 SoCon).

Coulson Buchanan (4-3) started for the Terriers and poured in a career-high 8.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and no walks, but he suffered the loss. Buchanan notched seven punchouts.
Lucas Mahlstedt contributed an inning, surrendering no hits or runs with a strikeout.

Bulldog starter Jacob Cravey (6-2) earned the win after a complete game with two runs on seven hits and a walk.

Cameron Gill paced the Terrier offense with two hits. He added a walk to reach base three total times.
Marshall Toole and
Jack Renwick drove in a run each along with their base hits. Toole's knock was a double, the lone Wofford extra-base hit in the contest.

The game proved to be a pitchers' duel, as both staffs combined for 18 strikeouts in the game. Each team issued only one walk, with Wofford's being intentional late. Only three total players tallied a multi-hit game.

After two quick scoreless innings, Wofford broke through in the bottom of the third.
Cameron Gill singled to lead off the frame, and then he stole second.
Jack Renwick brought him home with a single to left to get the Terriers on the board. A balk advanced Renwick to second, and
Marshall Toole came through with a double to plate Renwick for the early 2-0 lead.

Samford got onto the board with a solo home run in the fourth to cut the score to 2-1.

A pair of RBI doubles in the sixth pushed the Bulldogs in front, 3-2.

That was where the score remained, and both offense where held in check from there. Samford claimed the early edge in the series with a 3-2 win.

The squads battle in game two of the series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
