SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With a runner on and the score knotted up in the bottom of the 10
th,
Dixon Black sent the home crowd happy Saturday evening with a walk-off two-run home run to deliver a 13-11 victory for Wofford over Samford at Russell C. King Field. The result improves the Terriers to 28-10 (7-4 SoCon), and the Bulldogs drop to 22-17 (8-3 SoCon).
Today's game proved the be the antithesis of yesterday's game one, which was a pitchers' duel. Friday evening, the teams combined for only 13 hits. Today, each team topped that on its own and combined for 31 together. Game one saw only five total runs while game two featured 24 combined runs.
Lucas Mahlstedt (5-0) notched the win in relief for Wofford after pitching the final 5.0 innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Charlie Weber started for the Terriers, pitching 5.0 innings with four runs (three earned) on six hits with four punchouts.
Samford reliever Ben Petschke (3-2) suffered the loss after tossing 3.2 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk.
Three Terriers tallied three-hit efforts, led by
Trey Yunger with four runs knocked in.
Brice Martinez added three RBI with his three hits, and
Ryan Galanie rounds out the three-hit club.
Cameron Gill and
Dixon Black each notched two hits, with Black contributing three runs driven in and Gill driving in one.
But no one was more clutch than Black, who delivered the game winner with his two-run walk-off homer. The blast was his sixth round-tripper of the season. It was just the second walk-off win for Wofford this season, the first being an 8-7 triumph over Southern Illinois on Feb. 18 behind
Marshall Toole's RBI single.
The SoCon heavyweights were locked in a back-and-forth battle all afternoon, and the scoring began with
Trey Yunger's RBI single in the bottom of the first.
Andrew Mannelly delivered an RBI double in the following inning to provide an early 2-0 lead for Wofford.
But the first pendulum swing of the game occurred in the top of the third, when Samford utilized a three-run home run to pull ahead 3-2.
However, in the bottom of the frame the Terriers responded with three runs of their own to pull back in front.
Brice Martinez brought home a pair with a single.
Cameron Gill would then steal third, and an errant throw by the catcher allowed him to race home for the 5-3 lead.
Samford started its quest to come back again with an RBI single in fourth. That quest continued in the sixth with four Bulldog runs. The score stood at 8-5 in favor of Samford.
The Terriers wasted no time bouncing right back, depositing five runs in the bottom of the inning to push back into the lead. Yunger started things off with a two-run single up the middle, and
Dixon Black followed with an RBI single to right center. Gill added a run with his single, and Martinez utilized an infield single to bring home one more, making the score 10-8 for Wofford.
However, a pair of home runs for the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh provided Samford with another lead, 11-10.
In the bottom of the eighth, it was Wofford's turn to play long ball when Yunger went deep to right. His opposite-field solo shot evened the contest at 11 all.
Neither side could score in the ninth, marking free baseball in Spartanburg.
Despite getting a baserunner in the top of the 10
th, the Bulldogs were held in check by
Lucas Mahlstedt, who utilized a pair of punchouts to put the game in the hands of his offense.
The inning began with a single by
Ryan Galanie, and his place at first was traded out for Yunger after a fielder's choice. With one out and one on, Black stepped up and hit one gone, clobbering a no-doubt two-run bomb to left center to secure the walk-off win for the Terriers. The 13-11 triumph levels the series.
Wofford and Samford meet once more in the rubber match of the series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
