MORGANTON, N.C. – The Wofford women's golf team was led by a pair of freshmen at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate, placing fourth with a 920 score at the Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club, a par-72, 6,213-yard course.
Xuan Khue Minh Doan and
Ella Stoll each carded 230 to tie for 13
th, pacing the Terriers.
Wofford posted a 56-over par 920 score after carding 312-301-307. This was good for fourth in the 12-team field. With 155 pars, the Terriers recorded the second most in the field behind only the champion, Western Carolina. Wofford's 26 birdies were fourth most.
Western Carolina won the event with a 35-over par 899 score, finishing five strokes ahead of Georgia Southern, who held the lead entering the final round.
The Terriers were led by a duo of freshmen, as
Xuan Khue Minh Doan and
Ella Stoll each turned in 230 scores. Doan shot 79-76-75, and Stoll carded 80-75-75. The performance is the best yet for Stoll in her young career, as she posted new career bests with a 14-over mark, 230 score and 13
th-place result. Doan's 37 pars were one shy of the tournament lead. Stoll notched the fourth-most birdies with seven.
Despite losing out on the team title, Georgia Southern's Abby Newton claimed low medalist honors in the 75-player field with an even-par 216, finishing two strokes ahead of Western Carolina's Brielle Mapanao.
Lilli Horn finished just outside the top 20, recording a 232 score (78-76-78) to place in a tie for 22
nd.
Maggie Jackson was also not far out of the top 20, finishing in a tie for 26
th after carding 77-77-79 for a 233.
Nicole Amos started strong, scoring 78 and 74 in the first two rounds to enter the final day in 11
th. But a tough 82 in the final round dropped her to 30
th with a final score of 234 to round out the Terrier lineup. Despite this, Amos tallied the fourth-most birdies in the field with seven alongside her teammate Stoll.
Two Terriers competed as individuals, with
Taylor Burch placing in a tie for 47
th with a score of 242 (77-82-83).
Lindsey Hollis finished in a tie for 68
th with a score of 257 (84-84-89).
This was Wofford's final tune-up before the Southern Conference Championship, which will be held from April 16-18. The three-day event will take place at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
