Baseball Drops 8-4 Contest to Mercer on Senior Day

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team left it all on the field Sunday afternoon, but the Mercer offense again proved too much to overcome as the Bears won 8-4 at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers drop to 34-17 (9-9 SoCon) while the Bears improve to 31-20 (13-5 SoCon).

Before the contest, Wofford honored its nine seniors as part of Senior Day festivities: Ryan Galanie, Cameron Gill, Shane Lussier, Matthew Marchal, O'Kelly McWilliams IV, Jack Milani, Ben Schulte, Luke Stephens and Trey Yunger.

Wofford starter Matthew Marchal (9-3) suffered the loss after pitching 6.0 innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts. Lucas Mahlstedt tossed 2.0 innings with a run given up on two hits and a walk, and Luke Stephens tossed the final frame with a run allowed on a pair of hits.

Mercer reliever Garrett Sloan (2-1) grabbed the win in relief after pitching 2.2 innings with one run allowed on three hits. Jaxon O'Neal (2) notched a save after pitching the final 2.1 innings.

Both offenses were hitting well, as the teams combined for 22 hits. Mercer tallied 12 while Wofford knocked 10. The Terriers were led by three with two hits: Ryan Galanie, Dixon Black and Brice Martinez. Trey Yunger knocked home three runs, and his lone hit was a home run. Jack Renwick also drove home a run. One of Black's hits was a double, and Cameron Gill roped a double for his lone base knock.

Pitching started off strong for both squads with zeroes on the scoreboard through two frames, but the offense picked up in the third. Mercer opened the scoring in the top of the frame with an RBI single for the early 1-0 lead.

However, Trey Yunger powered a two-run home run to left in the bottom of the inning that gave Wofford the lead, 2-1.

Mercer played the long ball in the fourth with a solo shot, tying the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Terriers responded with a Jack Renwick RBI infield single. Wofford pulled back in front, 3-2.

The Bears pulled level in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, and then they added three more in the sixth with an RBI double and two-run homer. Mercer led 6-3.

Yunger aided in Wofford's comeback efforts in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly, pulled Wofford to within 6-4.

However, Mercer added a run in the top of the eighth and another in the top of the ninth, and Wofford was unable to score in the bottom of the ninth. Mercer secured the 8-4 win and a series sweep.

Wofford hits the road for one final series this weekend to conclude the regular season. The Terriers travel to Charleston, S.C. to take on The Citadel in a three-game series. The set begins Thursday afternoon and runs through Saturday. All three games are scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
