Baseball Takes Twin Bill at The Citadel

Terriers claim series with doubleheader sweep in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team got back on track in fashion with a doubleheader sweep of The Citadel Thursday at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The Terriers claimed game one 8-2 before prevailing once more in game two, 6-3. Wofford improves to 36-17 (11-9 SoCon) while The Citadel falls to 22-28 (7-13 SoCon).

Wofford out-hit The Citadel 17-12 over the course of both contests. Even more impressive was the difference in the free pass, as the Terriers worked 11 between the two games while issuing only three walks to the Bulldogs between 18 innings of play.

GAME ONE

Terrier starter Coulson Buchanan (5-4) earned the win after pitching 6.0 innings with only two runs allowed on three hits and a pair of walks. He fanned four. Lucas Mahlstedt (5) notched a save after tossing the final 3.0 frames, surrendering no walks or runs with only two hits allowed. He struck out three.

Bulldog starter Sam Swygert (5-3) took the loss after giving up four runs on five hits and three walks in 4.1 innings of work.

The Terriers doubled up The Citadel on hits, 10-5. Marshall Toole, Ryan Galanie and Jack Renwick each tallied two base knocks. Both of Renwick's went for extra bases with a home run and a double, as the junior drove in a run. Toole also brought home a run, and Galanie drove in three. He contributed a three-run homer and added two walks to reach base four times. Dixon Black tied Galanie for the team RBI lead in the game with three of his own. Wofford hitters worked five walks while Terrier pitchers issued only two.

Wofford threatened in the top of the first with a pair of runners on base, but the Terriers were unable to bring anyone home. The Citadel put a pair on in the bottom of the frame as well, and the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on their chance for the early lead. A sacrifice fly put them in front, 1-0.

But Wofford responded in the top of the third to pull ahead. Jack Renwick opened the frame with a solo shot to left that tied the contest. Later in the frame, a Dixon Black RBI fielder's choice scored Marshall Toole to put the Terriers in front 2-1.

With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Black roped a double to right field that scored two, extending Wofford's lead to 4-1.

The Citadel grabbed a run back in sixth with an RBI double, cutting the margin to 4-2.

But Wofford busted the game open in the top of the eighth, plating four runs. With runners on the corners, Toole laid down a bunt to score Brice Martinez, reaching on the fielder's choice. Ryan Galanie then stepped up with still two runners on, and he cleared the bases with a three-run blast to right. The Terriers pushed their lead to 8-2.

Lucas Mahlstedt remained steady on the mound over the final three innings to close out the contest and seal Wofford's 8-2 win to open both the series and doubleheader.

GAME TWO

Matthew Marchal (10-3) started for Wofford and secured a win, his 10th of the campaign to pull within one of matching the Wofford single-season program record. He hurled 5.0 innings while allowing only one run on four hits. Marchal totaled five punchouts with no walks. Zac Cowan threw 3.0 innings of relief, allowing two runs on two this with no walks and five strikeouts. Luke Stephens (4) recorded the save after locking down the final inning. He gave up only a hit and a walk with no runs.

Cameron Reeves (7-5) suffered the loss for The Citadel after giving up two run on two hits and a walk in 1.2 innings of work.

Trey Yunger and Brice Martinez led the way for the Terriers with two hits apiece, knocking in one and two runs, respectively. Yunger added a pair of walks to reach base four total times. They each hit a double, and Aaron Thomas added a solo home run for his only hit of the contest. Once again, the walk played a major role with the Terriers drawing six while issuing just one.

In the second leg of the twin bill, Wofford struck first with two runs in the top of the first. With two runners on, the Terriers executed a double steal to put them both in scoring position for Brice Martinez, who ripped a single into left center that scored them both. Wofford grabbed the early 2-0 advantage.

The Terriers extended their lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Jack Renwick. The Wofford edge was 3-0.

The Citadel broke through in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double. The Bulldogs trailed, 3-1.

In the top of the sixth, Aaron Thomas clubbed a solo home run to left center to push the Wofford advantage to 4-1.

The Bulldogs utilized their own long ball in the bottom of the frame, hitting a two-run homer to pull within a run, 4-3.

But Wofford responded in the eighth, as Dixon Black scored on a double play. An inning later, the Terriers tacked on another with a Trey Yunger RBI single to lead 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth.

The Bulldogs showed no quit, getting two runners on base with one out to threaten. But Luke Stephens remained cool under pressure, as he induced a ground ball from the potential tying run on the plate, which his defense turned into a game-ending double play. The Terriers held on to claim the 6-3 win and sweep the doubleheader, clinching a series victory.

Wofford and The Citadel will play the finale of the series tomorrow afternoon. The Terriers aim for a sweep with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
