Baseball Sweeps The Citadel with 7-5 Victory

Terriers stave off Bulldogs’ comeback attempts to win regular-season finale

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team jumped on The Citadel early and held on despite a late comeback surge by the Bulldogs to claim a 7-5 win at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Saturday afternoon. Wofford improves to 37-17 (12-9 SoCon) with the series sweep, and The Citadel falls to 22-29 (7-14 SoCon).

Charlie Weber (3-1) earned the win in a starting role for Wofford after pitching 5.0 shutout innings with three hits allowed and a pair of strikeouts. Weber was electric out of the gates, retiring the first 11 batters he faced in order. Holden Wilder turned in a scoreless inning of relief. Lucas Mahlstedt (6) closed out the final 2.2 frames to earn a save. He allowed only one run on three hits with a strikeout.

George Derrick Floyd (0-3) started for The Citadel and suffered the loss after pitching 5.0 innings with three runs allowed on three hits and five walks.

Dixon Black and Jack Renwick led the Terrier offense with multi-hit affairs. Black tallied three knocks while Renwick totaled two. Both had an extra-base hit, with Black hitting a double and Renwick adding a triple. Renwick paced the team with three runs driven home, and Black brought in one. Brice Martinez, though hitless, recorded a pair of RBI.

The walk again played a major role in Wofford's favor after the Terriers topped the Bulldogs 11-3 in free passes yesterday between the two legs of the doubleheader. Wofford batters worked eight walks today, and the Terrier pitchers issued only four. Ryan Galanie was the benefactor of three walks in the game to pace the team. Trey Yunger worked a pair of his own.

After a quiet first inning for both teams, Wofford struck first in the top of the second. Cameron Gill led things off with a double to right field, and a wild pitch moved him up to third. David Wiley then lifted a sacrifice fly that plated Gill, giving the Terriers the early 1-0 edge.

Wofford built upon its lead with selfless baseball in the third. With runners on the corners, Brice Martinez put down a sacrifice bunt that scored Ryan Galanie, extending the Terrier lead to 2-0.

The Citadel threatened in the bottom of the fourth as Charlie Weber faced baserunners for the first time in the contest. After retiring the first 11 batters of the contest, Weber allowed a single up the middle that sparked the Bulldogs eventually loading the bases. But Weber induced a flyout to left to evade any damage, keeping the score 2-0.

The Terriers tacked on another run in the top of the fifth. A well-timed hit and run saw Dixon Black single to right, allowing Marshall Toole to race around and score from first. Wofford's lead grew to 3-0.

In the top of the sixth, Wofford grew its lead even further with two more runs. With two runners on, Jack Renwick drove a liner into the left center gap, clearing the bases with a two-run triple. The Terriers led 5-0.

The Citadel hit a groove to finally crack onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. A pair of two-run doubles brought the Bulldogs to within a run, 5-4.

Wofford responded in the top of the eighth to create some breathing room. Renwick's RBI single helped the Terriers get a run back and push the lead to 6-4.

The Terriers added another insurance run in the top of the ninth with a Brice Martinez sacrifice fly. Wofford carried a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Showing no quit, the Bulldogs threatened with a pair of runners. An RBI groundout plated one, but Lucas Mahlstedt clamped down and worked out of the jam from there to ice the contest and secure Wofford's 7-5 win, clinching the series sweep.

Wofford concludes the regular season at 37-17 with a 12-9 SoCon clip. The Terriers enter next week's Southern Conference Baseball Championship presented by Holsten Gases as the No. 3 seed and earn a one-day bye into the double-elimination portion of the event. Wofford awaits the winner of Wednesday's play-in game between No. 6 UNCG and No. 7 Western Carolina. The Terriers will play their first contest on Thursday, May 25 at 7:00 p.m. at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C.
