JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –
Kerrington Johnson from the Wofford College track and field team competed at the 2023 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field East preliminary competition held at the University of North Florida on Thursday.
Johnson, a senior from Anderson, South Carolina, qualified 42
nd in the region to compete in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries for the third time in her career, becoming the first Terrier to ever qualify three times.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Johnson ran a 13.64 in the fifth of sixth heats. She placed 38
h of the 48 qualifiers in the first round, with the top 24 advancing to the quarterfinals on Saturday. Masai Russell of Kentucky was the top finisher.
During her career, Johnson won the 100-meter hurdles at the 2021, 2022 and 2023 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships and added wins in the 400-meter hurdles in 2022 and 2023. During the SoCon Indoor Championships, she won titles in the 60-meter hurdles in 2021, 2022 and 2023. She was also part of the outdoor 4x100 relay team that picked up titles in 2021 and 2023. Johnson was the 2021 SoCon Outdoor Freshman of the Year and the 2023 SoCon Outdoor Most Outstanding Performer. She holds three individual school records as well.
The top twelve qualifiers out of the two regions (24 total) will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 7-10 in Austin, Texas.
This is the fifth straight season that the Terriers have advanced at least one participant to the NCAA East Preliminary. Tanner Henry will compete in the men's high jump on Friday afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m.
