SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team was back on the field on Monday morning as they continued to prepare for the 2023 season. On Tuesday, the team will put on full pads for the first time.
Overall, the team is returning a total of 14 starters from last season, seven of which are on the defensive side of the ball. The Terriers will line-up in a multiple 3-4 base defense, as they look to make an impact this season.
"I think we are in a good progression right now," said co-defensive coordinator
Andrew Warwick. "We have a lot of guys that played a lot of snaps as freshmen and sophomores and they are starting to get a little older so I am excited where we are at. We have a way to go and have to get a lot better but the guys have the right mindset and are working hard. I think we are starting to build a lot more depth and the guys are starting to push and compete to get a starting role. In the secondary, I really like the young class coming in as they are an athletic and physical bunch."
On the defensive line, two starters are back for the Terriers.
Brandon Maina started eight games at nose tackle and
Chuck Smith started ten games at end. Smith was second on the team in tackles for loss and sacks last season. Other returners on the line with starts include
C.J. Tillman and
Cameron Woolery, while veterans
Marcus Dees,
Max Dulansky,
Seth Foster,
Andrew Guth,
Josh Harris,
Anthonie Lattany, and
Bra'Lyan Smith-Sapp also return. Three newcomers will provide depth for the group.
At linebacker, all four starters return.
Jalen Marshall and
John Boyles were the regular starters on the outside. At inside linebacker,
David Powers and
Eli Purcell both started all eleven games. Powers led the team in tackles, while Purcell was second.
Isaiah Mananga and
Harrison Morgan also had starts at the outside position. Other returning veterans include
Mark Brown,
Matthew Clayton,
Nick Morgan,
Benny Radicia, and
Jon Schaffer. They are joined by seven newcomers, two of whom are transfers.
Only one of the four starters in the secondary will be returning.
Isaiah Wadsworth started all eleven games at cornerback. Additional players returning with starts in the secondary include
John Michael DiRoberto and
Amir Annoor. Other veterans returning are
R.J. Brunson,
Damien Curtis,
Gabriel Harris,
Tommy Miller,
Javis Mynatt, and
Chase Soper. Eight newcomers join the secondary as well, including a pair of transfers.
