Spartanburg, S.C.- For the first time at Snyder Field the Wofford women's soccer team can say they have defeated the Radford Highlanders.
Wofford claimed its first home win over Radford in series history, and the first win overall since 1999 on Friday, September 15, in a 2-1 win to close out non-conference play.
Both offenses took their time finding their respective rhythms in part due to stellar defensive play. Wofford's defensive trio of seniors
Addie Marlett and
Meara Kelly and freshman
Bailey Mullen were on the pitch for all ninety minutes and forced Radford into difficult looks that resulted in only two of Radford's seven first half shots being on target, and both found the sure hands of senior goalkeeper
Caroline Doss.
The two first half saves tied Doss with Kara Boggs for sixth on the all-time saves list with 153 saves, a spot Doss claimed for herself with her first second half save in the 52nd minute. The senior from Greensboro, North Carolina finished her day with four saves that gives her 155 in her career.
"Organization, communication, all the things that we're trying to make almost second nature for us and they just had a great mentality in terms of defending crosses, defending shots… You could tell they wanted this, they wanted a result today," said Head Coach
Elissa Post on the team's defensive effort.
Freshman
Mary Liese Grier also contributed a career high 33 minutes played off the bench for the Terriers as a defensive midfielder.
The Terriers couldn't turn any of that defense into offense in the first half, registering four shots- none of which were on goal. The second half, however, saw Wofford take the lead and then pad the lead in rapid succession.
In the 47th minute junior
Ashley Grant was able to win the ball on a fast break chance and immediately crossed it into the box where fellow junior
Megan Childress ran underneath it and got a header off that bounced past the Radford keeper and into the net for her second goal in as many games and her third goal of the season. The assist on the goal was Grant's first of the season, but the Terriers weren't finished yet.
A mere minute later in the 48th, sophomore
Ines Obradovac took advantage of a mistake by the Highlander defense. Instead of finding the goalkeeper on a pass back, Obradovac intercepted the pass, made a move to avoid both the keeper and an oncoming defender and rifled off a shot that doubled the Terrier lead and her goals scored this season.
Radford would pull a goal back in the 57th minute off a ball that pinballed around the box and eventually found the back of the net off the foot of June Stevens- her second goal of the season. However, that was the last bit of offense that seriously threatened the Wofford defense. A shot in the 73rd minute found the gloves of
Caroline Doss and three corner kick opportunities were safely neutralized to preserve the lead and ultimately prevail 2-1.
"We talked a lot about ninety-minute effort instead of just the eighty-minute, sixty-minute… I thought they trained well, extremely well, all week and they knew tonight would have to be a ninety-minute effort. Radford's an incredible program," Post said of the team's effort to play with a lead and close out the match.
The Terriers will now be getting into the Southern Conference portion of their schedule, beginning on Thursday, September 21, against VMI on the road and the team's first road match in the month of September. Wofford has won the last three in Lexington, Virginia and the last six more broadly in the series. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 4 PM.
