WOLCOTT, Colo. – The Wofford women's golf team wrapped up play in the three-day Golfweek Red Sky Classic Wednesday, tying for ninth place with a score of 899. The Terriers were led by freshman
Bella Kent at the par-72, 6,440-yard Red Sky Golf Club – Fazio Course, as she collected her first-career top-five result by tying for third with a mark of 214, 2-under par.
Wofford opened play with a 298 on day one but followed with a 305 in round two. The Terriers bounced back with a 296 in the third and final round to secure their top-10 finish, tying for ninth in the 16-team field with a score of 899, 35-over par. Wofford was fifth best among the teams on par 5's, averaging 4.97.
Pepperdine won the event with an even-par 864, 10 strokes ahead of second-place New Mexico State.
Freshman
Bella Kent continued the sublime start to her career by posting her first-career top-five result after notching her first top 20 in the season-opening event. Kent opened the tournament with a 2-under 70 and followed up with a 72 in each of the next two rounds. Her 214 score at 2-under par marks a new career-best finish, the first under par in her career, to secure a tie for third in the 89-player field. The native of Berkshire, England, was one of only five golfers in the field to finish with a score below par. With a 3.97 average score on par 4's, Kent was fifth best in the field. Her 13 birdies tied for most among the competitors, and she added an eagle in the second round, another career first.
Kent finished only five strokes behind low medalist Alison Gastelum of New Mexico State, whose 7-under 209 score won the event by just two strokes.
Maggie Jackson joined Kent in the top 20, tying for 17
th. Jackson opened with a 75 before posting a 71 in round two. Despite a close-out 75, Jackson carded 221, 5-over par, for her sixth-career top 20. With a 4.42 average score on par 5's, Jackson was the best in event, totaling 7-under on such holes. Her 11 birdies were two shy of the event's leaders, and alongside Kent, Jackson recorded one of the two Terrier eagles.
Lilli Horn placed in a tie for 56
th with a score of 233. Despite opening with rounds of 80 and 82, Horn rebounded well with a 1-under 71 in the final round to advance 22 spots on the leaderboard over the final day of action.
Regina Parra (78-80-78) placed in a tie for 66
th with a score of 236, and
Taylor Burch (75-85-82) rounds out the Wofford lineup tied for 81
st with a 242 score.
The Terriers will be back in action in the Palmetto State with a two-day event on Monday, October 16 and Tuesday, October 17. Wofford travels to Edisto Island for the Edisto Island Invitational, hosted by the College of Charleston.
