Spartanburg, SC – Wofford men's basketball was unable to overcome Chattanooga's 15-5 opening run in a 79-65 loss to the Mocs.
Chattanooga hit six of its first seven shots to take the 15-5 lead just three minutes and seven seconds into the contest and ran the lead out to as many as 14 by the 7:51 mark. Wofford clawed back nine points over the next 3:24 to make the deficit only five points- due in large part to junior
Corey Tripp, who scored seven of his game high 22 points during that run (8-for-16 for the entire game). The junior added three steals, two assists, two rebounds and a block to his stat line for the night.
Three steals tied him with freshman
Quentin Meza and sophomore
Anthony Arrington, Jr. for the most by a Terrier this season. Â
Wofford again got the deficit down to five but surrendered an 8-0 run over the final two minutes to go 13 at the break.
Early out of halftime the Terriers cut the deficit to seven on buckets from Tripp and juniors
Jackson Sivills/
Kyler Filewich. Chattanooga put in two quick buckets and the Terriers trailed by single digits for the final time on Tripp's 15th and 16th points at the 16:33 mark.
Chattanooga's lead peaked at 20 points with 2:36 remaining before Wofford ended the contest on a 6-0 run to close the final deficit to 14 points. The loss to Chattanooga ends a string of nine straight home wins for the Terriers and is Wofford's first on its home court this season.
Filewich's 15 points (6-for-11 from the floor) is his best scoring game since scoring 16 points against Oklahoma State back on December 20, 2023, while sophomore
Chase Martin scored in double figures (10 points on 4-for-6 shooting) for the first time since November 26, 2023, against Lipscomb at the Northern Classic in Canada.
Sitting at 4-3 in the SoCon, Wofford concludes a brief two-game homestand when the team welcomes Furman to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Saturday, January 27, at 6 PM and can be seen on both ESPN+ and the CW.
