JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Wofford volleyball team was in rhythm early inside Brooks Gymnasium Friday afternoon and did not slow down en route to a straight-set sweep (25-14, 25-19, 25-22) of the ETSU Buccaneers. Wofford improves to 12-5 (4-1 SoCon) as ETSU falls to 10-7 (2-3 SoCon).
Â
The service line shined for Wofford in the contest with the Terriers providing six aces while allowing only two by ETSU. Offensively, Wofford was in sync the whole day with a .291 hitting clip on 44 kills, 14 errors and 103 attacks. On the other end, ETSU was guilty of 16 errors on 102 swings with 31 kills for a .147 clip. Only one of the Terrier kills was unassisted as Wofford amassed 43 helpers to the 31 of ETSU. The Terriers also led in blocks (6-3) and digs (49-40).
Â
Bri Mahoney led the charge for Wofford with 13 kills, 12 digs and four aces with two blocks. She led the team in kills and aces with those aces marking a new career best. With a double-double, she now owns four on the season and six in her career. The sophomore was one short of matching her career bests for kills and blocks.
Â
Mary Emily Morgan just missed double figures with nine kills, and with 14 digs she topped the squad as was just short of a double-double of her own.
Â
Taylor Pecht and
Maddy Frazier each dished 20 helpers to pace the offense. Defensively,
Laney Klika tallied 13 digs to mark a trio in double figures.
Natalie Arnold and
Bradley Brown both recorded three blocks to tie for the team lead, and
Annemarie Rakoski contributed a pair. Brown added two aces.
Â
ETSU opened the contest with the first four points and seemed poised to enjoy the home-court advantage. However,
Mary Emily Morgan struck for a kill to put Wofford on the board, sparking what became a seven-point run.
Bri Mahoney added a block and a kill with
Bradley Brown and
Natalie Arnold also teaming for a block. They both contributed kills in the run. After a pair of ETSU points, the Terriers embarked on a five-point swing that opened with two Mahoney kills. Brown posted back-to-back aces before
Annemarie Rakoski sent home a kill for a 12-6 lead. The Bucs pulled within 14-10 before Wofford hit another groove. A six-point run helped Wofford double up ETSU at 20-10 after Mahoney put home two aces and a kill. The teams traded some blows, but it was too little, too late in the set for the Bucs after pulling to within 23-14. A service error flipped control to Wofford with set point, and the Terriers iced the set at 25-14 thanks to a kill by Arnold.
Â
Staying hot entering set two, Wofford claimed the first four points of the frame. After trading blows, ETSU pulled out to a 9-7 lead thanks to a five-point run. Wofford began to chip away and used a three-point run to pull ahead at 12-11 with a Mahoney kill and two Buccaneer errors. ETSU tied the set on the following point, but Wofford won the next three points to lead 15-12 and never looked back. That run saw kills by Rakoski and Morgan before a punctuating ace by Mahoney. The teams remained neck-and-neck, however, until late in the set. Leading 20-18, the Terriers used a four-point run for set point after two Buc errors gave way to kills for Rakoski and
Sarah MacLean. Despite a late ETSU point, a service error provided the 25-19 set two win to Wofford.
Â
Wofford again got off to a hot start in set three. After ETSU claimed the first point, the Terriers notched the following four. They traded blows early until a Wofford 8-2 swing provided a 14-8 Terrier advantage. Mahoney added three kills in the swing with Brown, Arnold and MacLean also chipping in. Wofford remained on the gas pedal, and a Morgan kill pushed the Terriers to a 20-12 lead. However, ETSU remained steadfast and began to chip away. A six-point Buc run would pull the margin to within 21-20. An Arnold kill was followed by a Terrier error to keep it a one-point set. However,
Maddy Frazier caught the Bucs off guard with a dump kill, and Rakoski teamed with MacLean for a block to bring about match point at 24-21. ETSU tallied a kill to stay alive, but MacLean struck to end the set at 25-22 and secure the win for Wofford in straight sets.
Â
The Terriers will close out their four-match road trip tomorrow night with a match-up at Western Carolina. First serve in Cullowhee, North Carolina, is set for 7:00 p.m.
