Women’s Soccer Battles VMI to a 1-1 Draw

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team battled the VMI Keydets to a 1-1 draw at Snyder Field on Thursday night. Mary Liese Grier scored her first career-goal in what was the Terriers' only goal of the night.

Ellie Gower started things off for the team, finding a nice look at the goal in the fifth minute of the game. VMI responded with two shots of its own a few minutes later, but freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Navola and company denied both attempts.

Mary Liese Grier showed her aggression early on, as she took a career-high three shots in the first sixteen minutes of action including the first goal of her career in the 15th minute. Bailey Mullen fired a ball down the pitch to Kate Markey who gave a quick touch-pass to Grier for the score. Mullen notched her second-straight game with an assist, while Markey recorded her fourth of the year, leading all freshmen in the SoCon.

The Keydets continued to test the Wofford defense, taking eight more shots before halftime including three on goal. Navola found three more saves on the eight shots, bringing her total up to four heading into the break. The Terriers would head into the half leading 1-0.

Wofford kept up the steady offensive pace, taking three solid shots in the first ten minutes of action in the latter half. The team totaled 13 shots in the last 45 minutes for a total of 20 on the night, a new season high.

VMI was able to score the equalizer in the 61st minute on a header that came from a spot kick just outside the box. The Terrier defense tightened up down the stretch, however, not allowing another goal for the remainder of the night. Wofford found several clean looks as the night went on, including a close score by Aly Bernhard on a header that barely creeped over the crossbar. Neither team would score again with the game ending in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

The Terriers out-shot VMI 20 to 16, taking eight shots on goal compared to VMI's seven. Wofford finished the night with six corners with VMI taking five. Elizabeth Navola ended the night with six saves, while the Keydet keeper had five.

Wofford will be on the road Sunday, October 19, as the team will take a short trip to Greenville, South Carolina, to take on Furman University. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
