CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Wofford volleyball team opened the second half of conference play with authority Thursday night, toppling Chattanooga in straight sets (25-14, 25-19, 25-20) inside Maclellan Gym. Wofford improves to 15-6 (7-2 SoCon) with the triumph as the Mocs drop to 12-10 (3-5 SoCon).
Â
The sweep is the 11
th of the season for Wofford, matching the total of each of the last two seasons. The Terriers are now two shy of their Division I record of 13 straight-setters still with seven regular-season contests to play.
Â
Wofford controlled the match in every facet, most notably on offense and at the service line. Wofford's eight aces doubled up the four of Chattanooga. The Terriers posted 51 kills to the 30 of the Mocs with an assist advantage of 49-29. Wofford also topped the Mocs in digs (57-41) and blocks (5-2). The Terriers hit at a .358 rate tonight with only 12 errors in 109 attempts with the Mocs hitting at a .160 clip with 13 errors.
Â
Mary Emily Morgan and
Sarah MacLean led the way offensively for Wofford with 13 kills apiece. MacLean was errorless on the night with 22 swings, hitting at a staggering .591 rate.
Bri Mahoney just missed double figures with eight kills, and
Bradley Brown posted seven. She hit .500 with no errors on 14 attacks.
Â
Taylor Pecht and
Maddy Frazier fed the attack with 29 and 16 assists, respectively. Mahoney led the service efforts with four aces, matching her career best. Brown posted two, and
Laney Klika and Morgan each added one.
Â
Klika's 16 digs paced the squad, and Morgan had 15 right on her heels. That notched a double-double for the senior, her seventh this season and the 15
th of her career.
Â
Annemarie Rakoski swatted three blocks to eclipse the 100 denials threshold for her career tonight. Morgan and MacLean both added two behind her.
Â
Though Chattanooga won the first point of the match, Wofford rallied back with the following six points.
Sarah MacLean highlighted the run with a trio of kills.
Bri Mahoney added an ace, and
Annemarie Rakoski tallied a block with a kill. Chattanooga began to chip away, pulling with 14-8 before the Terriers went on another run, this time four points. Mahoney contributed two more aces in the run to push the Terrier lead to 18-8. Another four-point Terrier swing later made the margin 22-11 with two more MacLean kills and
Mary Emily Morgan posting a kill and block. The hole proved too much for the Mocs to climb out of as an attack error would seal the set for Wofford, 25-14.
Â
Set two opened similarly to set one with the Mocs claiming the first point before Wofford posted the following four. Mahoney kept up her torrid pace with a kill and ace in the run alongside kills from
Annemarie Rakoski and Morgan. Chattanooga pushed back as the teams traded points, keeping the set close at 13-11. Wofford won three in a row with a
Laney Klika ace highlighting the run for a 16-11 advantage, but the Mocs responded with a three-point swing themselves shortly thereafter to pull within 17-15. However, Wofford kept pace ahead of Chattanooga, using aces from Morgan and
Bradley Brown to lead 21-16. Despite the Mocs' best efforts to come back, Wofford held firm. A MacLean and Rakoski block led to a Morgan kill for set point, and though Chattanooga won a point, Morgan struck again to claim the set 25-19 for the Terriers.
Â
Fighting for their lives, the Mocs made set three a back-and-forth battle as the teams jostled for control early. Chattanooga led 9-8 before back-to-back points by Brown, a kill and ace, flipped the script for Wofford, 10-9. But Chattanooga pushed back to lead 11-10, and control changed hands several more times from there. A MacLean kill pushed Wofford up 14-13, but the Mocs tied it. However, Morgan and
Natalie Arnold posted kills to reclaim the lead 16-14, and Wofford did not relinquish it again. Though the Mocs pulled back within a point, Brown added a kill before blocking with Arnold to push Wofford's advantage to 18-15. The Mocs gave a fight, pulling within one point three more times, but after the last attempt at 20-19, Wofford claimed three-straight points thanks to kills by Mahoney, MacLean and Rakoski. A Wofford service error served as the final Moc point, as Morgan notched back-to-back kills to clinch the match with a 25-20 set three win for the Terriers.
Â
Wofford remains on the road tomorrow night with a match-up in Birmingham, Alabama, against Samford. First serve in the Pete Hanna Center is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
