GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford volleyball team began its first conference road trip in fashion, using an offensive outburst to defeat UNCG in a straight-set sweep (25-12, 25-18, 25-18) Friday night in Fleming Gymnasium. With the win, the Terriers improve to 11-4 (3-0 SoCon) with the Spartans dropping to 5-11 (0-4 SoCon).
The victory is Wofford's sixth in a row. The Terriers now own seven sweeps on the season with three coming during the win streak.
Wofford dominated most statistical categories during the match, especially utilizing an offensive outburst with over twice as many kills, 50-24. The Terriers also more than doubled up UNCG's assists with 46 to the 20 of the Spartans. Wofford led blocking (6-4), aces (4-3) and digs (49-43) as well. Efficiency proved pivotal for the Terriers, as Wofford hit .358 in the contest with only 11 errors on 109 swings. Meanwhile, UNCG committed 15 miscues on 96 attacks for a measly .094 clip.
"I think that we run a really good offense when we're in system, and our passing line did a great job of getting balls to the net," said
Sarah MacLean of the team's offensive efficiency. "I think that everybody that got to hit today was in one-on-one situations, and that made it easy to score."
Sarah MacLean led the way as one of three Terriers in double figures. MacLean recorded 14 kills with a .444 hitting percentage, committing only two errors in 27 attacks. Four total Terriers hit over .300 with at least 10 attempts.
Natalie Arnold paced the squad at .600 with six kills and no errors in 10 attacks.
Bri Mahoney added 10 kills with 11 digs for her sixth-career double-double and fourth of the campaign. Mahoney hit .304 with only three errors on 23 attacks.
Annemarie Rakoski hit at a .385 mark with seven kills and two errors on 13 swings. Also reaching 10 kills was
Mary Emily Morgan.
Taylor Pecht and
Maddy Frazier fed the attackers with 21 and 18 assists, respectively. The setting duo were responsible for all of Wofford's aces as the freshman Frazier captured three with Pecht tallying one.
Laney Klika held down the defense with 16 digs, pushing her career total over 500. Morgan had eight digs to fall just short of a double-double. At the net, four different Terriers recorded two blocks each. MacLean,
Bradley Brown and Rakoski each recorded a pair of block assists as Morgan posted a duo of solo swats.
"We'd been practicing all week on making sure we get that block closed and continuously talking along the net," said Rakoski of Wofford's blocking efforts. "When we realize certain plays are happening, we're talking to each other, shouting and just making sure we connect."
The Terriers set an early tone by claiming the first five points of the match to force a quick UNCG timeout.
Sarah MacLean recorded back-to-back kills to open the contest.
Mary Emily Morgan and
Annemarie Rakoski followed with Morgan adding another to cap the run. The Terriers used a four-point run later in the frame to extend the lead to 13-5. Another three-point swing pushed Wofford past the 20-point threshold at 22-9 with another MacLean kill and a
Maddy Frazier ace highlighting the run. A Spartan kill made their deficit 23-12, but it would be the last UNCG point of the frame as
Bradley Brown and
Natalie Arnold teamed for a block to bring about set point, and
Bri Mahoney capped the frame with a kill to secure a 25-12 Wofford victory.
Set two saw more fight from UNCG early, but a four-point run punctuated by back-to-back Mahoney kills pushed Wofford ahead 8-6. The Spartans fought back to tie the set at 8-all, but the Terriers claimed six of the next seven points to pull ahead 14-9. UNCG kept fighting, but
Annemarie Rakoski's kill brought Wofford to 20-16 and sparked a four-point Terrier run for some breathing room. Mahoney added a kill after Rakoski before
Taylor Pecht sent home an ace. UNCG claimed the following point, but Rakoski's kill created set point. After a UNCG kill, the Spartans committed a service error to hand set two to Wofford at 25-18.
Carrying that momentum into the potential clinching frame, Wofford opened the third by winning the first four points. Alongside a pair of Spartan errors, MacLean and Morgan tallied kills. After trading some points, the Terriers embarked on a six-point run with two Morgan kills alongside kills from MacLean, Arnold and Brown. Frazier's ace punctuated the swing with Wofford leading 11-4. A MacLean kill later had Wofford ahead 16-7 and poised to run away to victory. However, UNCG put forth a last-ditch fight to stay alive with a five-point run to pull within 16-12. MacLean added back-to-back kills to stifle the run, however, and then she teamed with Rakoski for a block. The Spartans continued to fight back, but the hole proved too much to climb out of. Brown and Arnold accrued back-to-back kills for match point at 24-17. UNCG tallied a point to stay alive, but Brown acted again with a kill to seal the set, 25-18, for Wofford and as such the three-set triumph.
The road trip continues tomorrow in Charleston, South Carolina, when Wofford faces Palmetto State foe The Citadel. First serve at McAlister Field House is set for 6:00 p.m.
