Men’s Basketball Inks Four New Players

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford men's basketball head coach Dwight Perry has announced the signing of four new Terriers for the 2025-26 season. Maximo Ortega, Brian Sumpter, Chace Watley, and Jayden Tyler round out the group. The student-athletes have signed aid agreements to join the program.

"We are really excited about the additions of Chace, Brian, Max, and Jayden," said head coach Dwight Perry. "All four of these guys are talented, high character young men with the potential to be great players during their time at Wofford. This group has a chance to continue the winning tradition here at Wofford. They all bring their own unique skill set to the table and all come from winning programs at the high school and grassroots level."

Maximo Ortega, a guard out of Pembroke Pines, Florida, helped lead Pembroke Pines Charter to a state championship last season. The 6-2 guard averaged 10 points, four assists and three boards a game during his junior year campaign. Ortega also played for Florida Pro where the team defeated multiple teams out of an exclusive Adidas basketball circuit known as 3SSB (3Stripes Select Basketball).

"Max is a strong, physical guard who plays with a real passion and competitive edge on both ends of the floor," said Perry.

A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Brian Sumpter has earned All-State, Co-Player of the Year and has been a two-time All-Region selection at WJ Keenan High School. He has also played for the Upward Stars. Sumpter hails from an athletic family, as his father played college football along with his sister currently playing for the College of Charleston women's basketball program. The 6-8 forward is a member of the National Honor Society as well.

"Brian has a special combination of size, skill and versatility that allows him to impact the game in so many different ways," said Perry.

Chace Watley, a 6-2 guard from New Hope, Minnesota, has helped lead his team to three State Championships. The Totino-Grace High School product averaged 13 points a game on his way to All-State honors his junior season.

"Chace is a natural playmaker with a basketball IQ and savviness well beyond his years," said Perry.

A Homewood, Illinois, native, Jayden Tyler scored 407 points last season at Homewood Flossmoor Community High School. The 5-10 guard shot 43 percent from three-point land while tallying 89 assists. An All-Area Honorable Mention, Tyler has helped lead his team to a 4A Regional Championship, a Sectional Championship, a Super Sectional Championship and a State Championship. Hailing from an athletic family, Jayden's uncle played college basketball along with his dad playing college football.

"Jayden is a hard-nosed guard who can score the ball in a myriad of ways and always plays with a chip on his shoulder," said Perry.

The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to Wofford College and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
