Toole Garners Player of the Month Recognition

Junior outfielder hit .469 with 11 steals to open season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced today its selections for athletes of the month for all competition in February with Wofford baseball's Marshall Toole honored as the player of the month on the diamond. Toole is one of three total Terriers recognized for the month of February across all active sports. The selections are made by the league office.

This is Toole's first monthly award for his career. He is the first Terrier to be named SoCon Player of the Month since Ryan Galanie took home the award in March of last season.

"I'm really proud of Marshall on being named player of the month," said head coach J.J. Edwards. "He has made tremendous strides over the last couple years, and it is always great to see someone get rewarded for that level of commitment. He is the embodiment of how we want our players to work and be good teammates, so this honor is well deserved."

Toole was a force at the plate in the opening month of the campaign as the Terrier lead-off man. The junior hit .469 with a slash line that only gets more impressive as it continues. He boasted a .564 on-base percentage with a slugging clip of .656 after recording 15 total base knocks, four of which went for extra bases. Those are split evenly between two doubles and two triples. Toole drove home eight runs while scoring 14 himself, and he added in a team-best seven walks drawn. Getting on base over half of the time he stepped to the plate, Toole made the opposition pay by swiping 11 bases and going perfect on his attempts, avoiding a single caught stealing to lead the nation in swipes. In the field, Toole recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding clip with no errors and 14 putouts.

The native of Decatur, Georgia, recorded at least one hit in each of the eight games in the month, including five with multiple hits. One of those was a three-hit, three-run effort against Bucknell in game two of the season. Toole reached base five total times in the game with two walks added in. He deposited three more hits against FDU on February 23, driving home a career-high four RBI. On the basepaths, Toole notched three games with multiple steals, the highlight of which was the Sunday finale against the Knights in which the speedster stole four bags. That matched his career best and tied for second most in a single game in program history.

Wofford is currently 12-2 on the season and riding a six-game winning streak. The Terriers begin a three-game series on the road at the College of Charleston this evening with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
