Lexington, VA – Wofford men's basketball held VMI to just 23 points in the second half as the Terriers ended the regular season with a 74-62 road win over the Keydets.
Coming out of the intermission, Wofford held VMI to just nine points over the first 9:48 of the half while erasing the team's five-point halftime deficit. Juniors
Kyler Filewich and
Dillon Bailey were particularly effective options for the Terriers as Filewich tallied nine points in the closing half on 4-for-5 shooting- he finished the game with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 block and 1 steal and Bailey 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists.
In dishing out those six assists, Filewich became the seventh Terrier to compile 100+ rebounds and assists in the same season since 2001-02, joining his teammate,
Corey Tripp. However, Filewich stands alone as the only Terrier in Wofford's D-I era to compile 100+ assists and 200+ rebounds. And should Filewich overtake Tripp for the team lead in assists, he would be the first Terrier since Karl Cochran in 2014-15 to lead the team in both assists and rebounds.
Tripp and Filewich did make history together though- becoming the first pair of teammates to each compile 100+ assists since Brad Loesing and Jamar Diggs during the 2010-11 season and the first pair of teammates to compile 100+ assists and rebounds since at least the 2001-02 season.
Bailey meanwhile did his damage at the free throw line converting six of eight attempts. Eight attempts for Bailey are his most during conference play and the most since going to the line eight times against Gardner-Webb on December 6, 2023. Six makes is also a conference play best, and the best for him since sinking 10 against UNC Asheville at the Northern Classic on November 25, 2023.
Sophomore
Anthony Arrington, Jr. contributed ten points off the bench for the Terriers, marking the first time the sophomore scored in double figures in consecutive games in his career (was coming off a career-high 15 points against Samford the last time out).
With the win, Wofford finished conference play 10-8, a two-game improvement from last season under Head Coach
Dwight Perry and the fifth-place finish means the Terriers overachieved from the eighth-place prediction in both the coaches and media preseason polls. Ten SoCon wins also marked the eighth time in the past ten seasons Wofford won double digits in conference play and the third time in the past four seasons.
However, despite the fifth-place finish, Wofford will be the sixth seed heading into next weekend's SoCon Tournament (March 9-11) due to tiebreakers where the team will matchup first with Chattanooga. Wofford has met its season end against the Mocs in the previous two SoCon tourneys. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 6 PM on Saturday, March 9, on ESPN+.
