ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team played Winthrop close early Tuesday evening at Winthrop Ballpark, but two five-run frames by the Eagles provided enough separation for Winthrop to secure a 16-6 win in eight innings. Wofford falls to 16-6 with the result with Winthrop improving to 11-12.

Mason Compton (1-2) suffered the loss for the Terriers in a starting role. He was the first of eight Wofford pitchers to toe the rubber, allowing four runs on five hits with a strikeout in 1.1 innings.

Brady Houston (1-3) picked up the win for Winthrop as the first arm out of the bullpen, tossing 3.2 innings with five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk.

Wofford posted six runs on nine hits in the contest, with three of those hits coming from
Tyler Hare. He added in a pair of runs knocked home, both coming from his two-run home run. It was his eighth long ball of the season.

David Wiley joined him with multiple hits, clubbing two doubles. Wiley drove home one run. Though hitless,
Dixon Black drew three walks, and
Marshall Toole worked a walk to extend his on-base streak to 22 games in a row.

The Terriers ran wild in the game, swiping eight bags. Toole and Black each stole a pair.
Andrew Mannelly,
Brice Martinez, Wiley and Renwick all added one. Toole's steals give him 18 on the season, and he remains perfect on his attempts.

After threatening in the first, Wofford scored the opening runs of the contest in the next frame.
Tyler Hare and
David Wiley opened the top of the second with back-to-back hits to place runners on second and third. A throwing error allowed the first run to score, and a second came across with
Jack Renwick's RBI single. The Terriers led 2-0 in the middle of the second.

But Winthrop struck back in the bottom of the frame, plating five to claim the lead. A two-run triple tied the game before an RBI single gave the Eagles an advantage. A two-run home run would then make the score 5-2 after two innings.

In the top of the third, Wofford pulled within one run thanks to a Hare two-run homer, but Winthrop remained one step in front with a run scoring on a double play in the bottom of the frame. After three, the score stood at 6-4 in favor of the Eagles.

Wofford again pulled within a run by way of an
Andrew Mannelly RBI single in the top of the fourth, but Winthrop tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the inning to extend its lead to 9-5.

The Terriers pulled a run closer with Wiley's run-scoring double, cutting the margin to 9-6.

The Eagles added another with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, making the margin 15-6.

An RBI single in the bottom of the eighth plated the game-ending run, sealing a 16-6 win for the Eagles.

The Terriers return to action on Thursday, March 28, when they travel to Lexington, Virginia, for a conference series against VMI. Those three games continue Wofford's six-game road swing with the series running from Thursday to Saturday. The opener on Thursday is set to start at 6:00 p.m.
