SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team was unable to rally Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field after Western Carolina plated five runs in the first two innings en route to a 7-2 win over Wofford. The Terriers dip to 28-12 (8-5 SoCon) with the defeat as the Catamounts improve to 22-18 (7-7 SoCon).
Â
Camden Wicker (2-2) suffered the loss for Wofford as the starter, tossing 6.0 innings with five runs allowed on seven hits and two walks. The freshman fanned five batters. Despite allowing those five runs in the first two innings, Wicker settled down and forced four-straight scoreless frames against the Catamounts.
Branton Little pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He walked no one and recorded a pair of punchouts.
Â
Dusty Revis (6-1) earned the win in relief for Western Carolina after 3.1 innings of work with no runs allowed on a hit and two walks. Jonathan Todd (7) picked up the save after pitching the final 1.2 innings with no runs or hits surrendered.
Â
Wofford was held to six hits in the contest with
Jack Renwick pacing the squad with two. One of his hits was a triple.
Marshall Toole added a double, the only other extra-base knock for the Terriers. He has pushed his on-base streak to a whopping 40 games.
Dixon Black and
Tyler Hare each picked up an RBI with their hits. Black added a walk to reach base twice, and Hare's hit was a home run, his 12
th long ball of the campaign.
Daniel Jackson is the owner of the final Wofford hit, and like Black, he also worked a walk to reach twice.
Â
Much like game one yesterday evening, Western Carolina struck first with a home run in the top of the first. However, today's homer was a two-run shot unlike the solo homer from yesterday. Wofford would get one of those runs back with a quick response in the bottom of the frame.
Marshall Toole clubbed a lead-off double, and
Dixon Black promptly singled him home to make the initial margin 2-1.
Â
But the Catamounts added three more runs in the second. An RBI groundout was followed by a single and double that each produced a run, stretching the Catamount lead to 5-1.
Â
The Terriers responded once more in the fourth when
Tyler Hare connected on a pitch, launching a no-doubt solo blast to right field to chip into the margin at 5-2.
Â
But both pitching staff settled in from there, forcing four-straight scoreless frames for both squads from the fifth to the eighth. The Catamounts would add two insurance runs in the top of the ninth by way of a two-run homer, and the Terriers faced their last at-bats down 7-2.
Â
Wofford was unable to get its rally going against the Western Carolina closer, dropping the Saturday contest 7-2 with the series pulling even.
Â
The rubber match will be played tomorrow afternoon. First pitch for the series finale is set for 1:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field, and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
